I almost returned this, but I grow to like it so I keep it. It is less solid than the more expensive grinder by the same brand, but it works as described and it looks good - if you don't mind having bits of salt or pepper on the table when you put it down.

They look beautiful on the kitchen counter but always leaves a mess of salt and pepper grains whenever used/moved slightly which is a pain

I'm not super picky on salt and pepper shakers, I just wanted something a little classier than the regular cylinder ones I buy at the grocery store. I'm perfectly happy with these and they work great. They seem easy to refill although they came full which is a plus! They way they're packaged looks great and is definitely giftable and would make a great housewarming gift.

Granted these Cole & Mason Salt & Pepper grinders were not expensive. But you get what you pay for. These grinders are flimsy, made of plastic vs. glass. They grind the salt & pepper...but they are not sturdy. They stand up crooked vs straight because they're just not that well made. If you really want quality Cole & Mason salt & pepper grinders, go for the higher cost versions.

the web site says the grinder is "hardened carbon steel" for the pepper grinder, and "diamond-cut ceramic" for the salt grinder.N*O*TIt's all plastic on both grinders, their web site lies - go figure.

Cole & Mason is a century-old English firm that sells spices and grinders. That's all they do, and they are good at it. This set is an economy version of their much pricier Derwent grinders. They have the same timelessly elegant design. The only real difference is the size and the ease of controlling the grind. They come pre-loaded with Vietnamese peppercorns and Belgian sea salt.These grinders are made of stainless steel and acrylic that should hold up well for many years in normal household use. The mechanisms are not plastic, as some reviewers have alleged, but ceramic and stainless steel. They are held in place by an acrylic clip that may have caused the confusion.The instructions say to adjust the grind by turning the top screw. They come set for the finest grind. Here is how to make them work: loosen the screw until it is almost off and whack it with a wooden spoon. It will now be set on the coarsest grind. Now tighten the screw until you get the grind you want. Also notice that the salt grinder comes packaged with a thin plastic film over the bottom that must be removed.Follow-up: After six months of daily use, we have given up on this pepper grinder and gone back to our Derwent because it will not hold a grind setting and needs to be reset every time it is used.

These are very nice Salt & Pepper shakers. Much more classier out the box. Pure quality and easy to use. They add a touch of elegance and goes with any table setting. However, they are made of stainless steel and plastic but one can't tell by just a glance.I also love the fact that they have the letters engraved on the top indicating which is which, adding an additional touch to them. I definitely recommend purchasing these and they come with a 10 YEAR MECHANISM GUARANTEE. Can't beat that!

Cole & Amazon are the brand name in s&p to get. Quality abounds. The size of the grind is determined by the tightness of the lid. These are a little tighter than I would like, meaning the grind is much finer than I would personally prefer, but o really just happy to have a great quality set!
