a great lift
I rented this unit for $60/day at ABC Rental in Buffalo NY and it worked great. I had to get a large window up to a second floor and was considering a drywall lifter but the forks were too far apart and not deep enough. I had never seen a SLC-24 before but the clerk gave me a 5 minute instruction and I could operate it. Some observations:1. be aware that the main mast tilts back, in order to maintain its load properly, so the higher your load goes the farther your load gets from your target - something to consider if the unit is facing a wall. You need the stability of the long front wheels but they actually keep you somewhat from your target.2. the forks are hollow so if need be you can extend the working reach of the forks by inserting 3-4 feet metal pipe inside them.3. the manual crank is slow but I would prefer it over anything electrical. The manual crank locks automatically and is easy to turn.4. it's billed as a one man unit (one big man) but if you are not working on level concrete (like outdoors) you'll need two men.5. it's best to have to 2x4's handy as you'll probably need to level the unit if you're outdoors.6. I loaded this onto an old toyota compact pickup truck (1993) which had a 6' bed and the end of this lift was riding on my tailgate. We got the window in place by walking it out to the end of the forks and beyond using pipe inserted into the forks. After the window was in we discovered our ladders wouldn't reach the top of the window to finish it off so I lifted a man up, using this lift with a plywood platform, and it worked well. Note that most of what I've said violates many of the warnings and directions for using this unit.Bottom line - we had planned to install the window from ladders but we must have been dreaming - you need a unit like this. It saved our butts. Would a homeowner ever buy something like this? No way. But if you can rent one like I did - do it. If you're a small contractor considering a lift check this one out, a dummy like me could use it in 5 minutes. It's rugged and if you need to get windows, appliances, shingles etc up to a second floor this is your baby.
