Fowler 54-554-630-0 Xtra-Value Electronic Caliper with 0-6"/150mm

I bought this for checking for uniform thickness of planed wood for some precision work - something that a traditional caliper can't cope with very well. Having had awful experiences with sub-$50 calipers, micrometers, and other measurement tools from Amazon (and always eventually having to shell out for Mitutoyo or Starrett), so I was actually quite skeptical, but I wasn't ready to spend $500 on one of these brands. Surprisingly, this $50 gage works like a charm. It's simple to use, reliable, and provides very repeatable results. It also seems to be accurate to more than 0.01", provided that you apply consistent force to the jaws.My only gripe is that it's not particularly ergonomic - instead of a lever to open the jaws, it is spring-loaded and just bounces open when you loosen the screw. You need apply pressure to close it, but if you apply a bit too much, you can get incorrect results. Not a huge deal, but also didn't strike me as the best possible design. But then, for the price... probably OK.

If your left handed you must hold it very awkwardly… it still works, but man.

Bought one of these things to measure the thickness of dished metal parts. The build quality is good. It's a quite accurate instrument, at least for my purposes. I love the way I can clamp it onto a metal plate, a bowl, a wooden board or some such object, slide the jaws along the surface of the object to search for sections that are too thick by simply tracking the readings on the LCD screen. The jaws gape ranges from 0-19 cm and it can reasonably measure a 1mm thick section of metal with a circa 5 x 5 cm rim between the jaws, i.e. if you imagine a 5 x 5 cm square section torus you would be able to get the jaws over it and close the jaws completely in the middle of the torus. The one rather significant annoyance is that the little caddy that goes into the side of the blue housing does not snap in place which caused me to lose the thing when, without me noticing, it slipped out of its recess along with the battery. I did find the thing again, put the caddy into the device and glued it in place with masking tape, problem solved. Having said this it's a pretty good instrument for the price, at least for my purposes.

I bought this thickness caliper in 2022 and have used it exactly three times. When the battery required replacement I discovered that I couldn't easily extract the plastic tray that holds the battery. Some gentle coaxing with my fingernails released the tray-- in pieces. I emailed Customer Service, provided pictures of the gauge, and heard nothing from them. When I followed up with a phone call I was curtly told they don't have the part. So now I'm the proud owner of a decent seldom used gauge that is absolutely useless. This story could have had a better ending if the manufacturer (a) had access to parts for its product, or (b) offered some other sort of remedy for my problem.

Good product for the money, I can’t complain about that. They are a bit weak and the fit& finish could be better. The plastic housing seems a bit cheap, but for the pricepoint I don’t think it’s an issue at all.

Like every other item on Amazon it’s a cheaply made piece of junk. One use and the display was all over the place. No accuracy at all. Numbers kept going up and down and it would not zero out. Do not buy

A good price for a niche product, works well however seems like it might be a bit fragile. Also only 0.1mm resolution and I found that it’s easy for the tips to “slip past” each other such that the measurement was below 0 and more than closed.
