A Picture Book of Davy Crockett (Picture Book Biography)

Parental advisory recommended
I bought this book for my 4 year old nephew because he is quite obsessed with the old school Davy Crockett song. Yes, that song is a bit sketchy when you hear all the lyrics.. so I was cautious when looking for an appropriate Davy Crockett picture book for him. This book is quite informative, however, it is more appropriate for older elementary kids that are capable of digesting stories involving battles, death and war. There is a picture of a battle with native Americans and you can see people on the ground and some blood. Also, at the end it explains how Davy was stabbed to death... :/Granted, a 4 year old won’t be able to read the book themselves so you can cut out parts of the story, but you can’t avoid some of the pictures.I would recommend this as an introduction to Davy’s life for an older child that is studying American history.

A wonderful Teaching Aid
As a primary grade teacher in Tennessee, I was rather surprised to learn that few of my students knew about Davy Crockett. And we live near the Crockett Tavern and 45 minutes from his birthplace. We were exploring our Appalachian hertiage and I introduced 17 kids to the king of the wild frontier. They were mesmerized. This book reads easily and follows a narrative format, so it's a great read aloud. We followed it up with a viewing of the classic Disney series starring Fess Parker, and then compared the two heroes. We also determined that despite the song lyrics, he was not born on a mountaintop, but rather the foothills. While I have used it with kindergarten and first grade, this book would also work wonderfully with older students and provide opportunities to compare and contrast, discuss exaggeration, the hero myth, and American History.

arrived broken
book was brand new and very nice except apparently in shipping the book was folded in half and broke the binding in 2 places. so much for a nice birthday present for my grandson. very disappointing. it is now difficult to turn the pages and the book is already beginning to tear which wont hold up as it is a childrens book.

Buy for an older child than it recommends
The description said it was appropriate for a six year old. This material is way too advanced for a six year old. More like a third or fourth grader. I have now bought 3 books on Davy Crocket. My final book purchase is "Who is Davy Crocket" which is still a little advanced, but better than the other two. I just wanted to explain the coon skin hat I was giving at Christmas. I guess the story is no longer relevant in this century.

this book is fine but I can't imagine any kids getting excited about ...
Bought to accompany a skin coon cap gift, this book is fine but I can't imagine any kids getting excited about it. The cartoon style illustrations limit the imagination and bring down the overall impact.

Things I never knew about Davy
It gave a lot of facts about him but also dealt with things that were a part of his legend that were not true.
