The Abyss (Special Edition)

Most of the time a director's cut simply includes the inane and tedious scenes a movie could do without; scenes that add neither plot advancement or character development.In this case however, the scenes deleted from the theatrical release make the trajectory of the plot totally different. This director's cut makes it fuller, more robust film with deeper undertones.

MOST OF THE MOVIE IS UNDERWATER SCENES OR SCENES INSIDE AN UNDERWATER LIVING QUARTERS, THE PLOT IS SOLID, ONE OF THE FIRST MOVIES MADE WHERE AN X-WIFE IS BROUGHT ON BOARD BECAUSE SHE'S THE EXPERT AT REPAIRING THE UNDERWATER HABITAT, THIS SUB PLOT HAS BEEN RE-USED MANY TIMES SINCE, ITS WELL CAST, THE CHARACTERS ARE BELIEVABLE, THE VILLAIN IS A NAVY SEAL PLAYED BY MICHEAL BIEHN FROM ALIENS, AND TERMINATOR ONE, SUNKEN SUBMARINE, RUSSIAN SPY-SHIPS, NUKES, HURRICANE, DAMAGED AND MALFUNCTIONING SUBMERSIBLES, AND UNDERWATER ALIEN LIFE FORMS, ITS AN INTERESTING MOVIE. AHEAD OF ITS DAY,

I got this to replace the disk to my two-disk special edition set. This is exactly what I was looking for. It has the theatrical release as well as the director's cut, which features extra scenes that provide context for the "aliens" actions.Very good easy to us. I"m giving it 4 stars because the scene selection didn't work. I was unable to get to the exact scene I wanted. Could be my DVD, but it should work nonetheless.Very good buy. Glad I can show my kids this great James Cameron movie.

The quality of the video is exceptional and I absolutely adore this movie personally. But the frame around the actual movie made the viewing screen smaller than it needed to be!! And there are NO options to fix it anywhere so you just have to watch it that way which sucks. But I still love the movie and am glad to have it. Would definitely be better on a very large flatscreen but a small one isn’t great for it.

I bought this to replace my old VHS version. I've always liked this movie. I would definitely recommend it.

The movie itself is really well done. I like both the theatrical, and special edition versions of the movie. The special edition will make more sense with the ending but both are good.The only real issue I have with it is that there isn't a blu-ray, or 4K version for this movie. It really deserves the upgrade in quality. If you play on a 4K TV it will shrink the screen viewing area to accommodate the lower resolution.

When you start the movie, the frame has been cropped turn the film into a tiny letterbox. I imagine to give the viewer the illusion of widescreen, though very poorly done. At the start, the logo for 20th Century isn't even fully visible. Watching the film via this DVD means you will not see the film in its entirety, as if you are watching with your eyes half closed. DO NOT BUY
