Childhood Memories
I remember watching the tv series of this back in the mid '70s. To be honest I don't remember much of the story but it must have been something special as it stayed in my memory. SoWhen I found out it was available for kindle it was a no-brainer.The story of the young half gypsy Kizzy is not a comfortable read at times. She is bullied and picked on at school and is not trusting of others as she isn't used to them. There are good people in the village too though who want to help if she'll let them into her life.Really, really enjoyed this

beautifully told by one of the most talented story tellers ...
Captivating story, beautifully told by one of the most talented story tellers in the English language. Rumer Godden had a gift for capturing children's imagination with real characters, perfectly built plot, deep sensitivity and beautiful language.

A good story, beautifully put together
You could probably tell by reading a couple of pages of an unmarked manuscript if a work was by Rumer Godden. This is no different. A good story, beautifully put together, and which always makes you read on a page or two more than you intended.

Lovely book
Got this for my mum for her birthday. It was one of her favourite books when she was younger, and she cried when she unwrapped it. Think it went down well - she read it in a night.

A trip down memory lane
This evokes memories of when I watched the series on TV as a child! Such an incredible story! Love it!

Excellent tale of bullying with a lovely heroine
Kizzy is half-gypsy and bullied by the other children in the village; her plight becomes quite desperate after the death of her granny who looked after her. This story, suitable for children of eight and over, will appeal to adults as well; Kizzy is a convincing and attractive character (not without her faults) and her struggle to find a place in her village is excellently portrayed. The bullying at school is nasty but realistic. Definitely a book to be treasured and re-read.

Magic and misery
Such a sensitive mix! Godden has a wonderful understanding of human nature, children in particular. Not all children have an easy childhood, one senses that her recollection is fresh.

Classic tale of loss and exclusion - with a happy ending
I think I was eight or nine when I first read this book and was captivated by it, immediately adoring the heroine Kizzy, a half-gypsy girl needing a home after the death of her beloved Gran. The account of Kizzy's bullying at school is realistic and shocking, and the story of how Kizzy finds a new home and a place in her village community will move not only children but any adult who is lucky enough to discover this lovely little book.

Gorgeous story, superb writing
I've started returning to books which had a huge impact on me in my (getting quite long now) life. I could remember little about The Diddakoi other than that I loved it. As an adult I still love it. As an author, I now recognise that Rumer Godden was an absolute master of the language. The story is gorgeous and the writing simply divine.

Okay for Youngsters
I am writing about Gypsies, and this book only added to my knowledge through Gypsy family life. This is a story about a Gypsy girl here in America, and the discrimination portrayed in the book is pretty standard in Europe too. There are better written accounts of stories like this, and I did not finish the book.

Holds up well.
I loved this book as a child and love it even more now. Many of the books from this era do not hold up well in light of the changes that have taken place in the last 50 years. This one is still a winner.

Great First Novel
Great first "real" novel for a young reader (8+). Written in colloquial English dialect so it's best read aloud by an adult who can quickly define unusual vocabulary. Wonderful story with many interesting twists and turns to the plot and sound character building lessons. My almost 8 year-old granddaughter doubled over in laughter at comical circumstances and shared tears of both sadness and joy. I would highly recommend this for a read-aloud to young readers and for independent older readers.Gloria Hinojosa

voracious reader
Excellent book about children's harsh treatment of others who seem 'different' to them and about a child's adjustment after having been ripped out of one culture into a radically different one. Charming story! I was late discovering Rumer Godden and have ordered several of her books from Amazon. Glad I finally found her.

Story for children and those who love children
A soothing story, gentle, but not too sweet. I found it particularly pleasant in this restless times full of revolutions and threatening wars.

My Opinion
Though it is a children's book I've always liked the story and I was happy to find one that was in great condition and cheap too!
