Legal Tender: True Tales of a Brothel Madam

The author was a casino host in Las Vegas when two of her friends bought a legal brothel and talked her into running it. It was very dirty, Poorly kept establishment when she started. She built it into a beautiful resort over time. She was a master of customer service and made sure both her girls and the customers were well taken care of.About 35 years ago I became friends with a lady who was a local retired Madame. She had run a very successful business for over 40 years and was tolerated by the authorities even though it was an illegal business. We are close to two military bases andduring the Second World War her business became very well-known by army recruits from all over the country. She also had a reputation for treating her girls and her clientele well. She told me many similar stories to those recounted in the book.It has always seemed strange to me that sex is the only thing that you can give away but if you charge for your time it is illegal almost everywhere. I think sex work should be legal and a respected profession like it is in the Netherlands and a few other countries.

Let me save you some time reading it. "Who woulda thought that a normal conservative woman like me would end up in charge of a bunch of whores LOL" is the message, repeated constantly. Like, actually repeated. This book is a rambling collection of interviews only half organized. The big take away is that she treated it like an ordinary business and profited from it, even as she routinely disparages sex workers and people who frequent brothels. It's terrible.

This was such a good book that was funny, interesting and amusing. I could keep on reading it but there always has to be an end. She made the business of being a Madam classy, which included the "girls". What a great person she is! Heck I'd go to that brothel if she was still there! Lol...

Legal Tender: True Tales of a Brothel Madam was a great fun read. I could hardly put it down. It captured my attention from the start and while the story brought much laughter it also brought some tears. Laraine is truly one of the most amazing people I have had the pleasure to meet. When you do meet her this is not a job you would expect to find on her resume but she has every reason to be proud of what she accomplished during her tenure. She has a wonderful sharp wit plus a genuine compassion for people and animals. She colorfully describes the brothel which is not far from where I now live and educated me on it's history. Regardless of one's own views on legal prostitution, she makes you think about all sides. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they know what a brothel is. You will be very surprised.

Interesting read for sure. The author gives an inside look of the world of legal prostitution in Nevada. The girls, the staff and those who frequent the place are all captured in this narrative. Funny, touching, outrageous and heart-felt, this book has it all.

Great read!!! As a new mom, I am up every 3 hours of the night to pump, and I like to read while doing so (TV wakes the bambino)...this book was so entertaining and very well written! It passed the 3/4am test and didnt put me to sleep!! Highly recommend :)
