The wii u is a new console. not a add on to the wii. you can play wii games on it however, you can not use the gamepad to play them.

Does the console play DVD's?

No. In fairness, it would be more expensive then due to licensing agreements and almost everyone has a DVD player. It has the hardware to play blu ray discs and DVD's, but not the software. Some people illegally install the software and others think it will come in a future update.In fairness, the off screen play and dual screen functionality for local multiplayer more than makes up for lack of DVD player. It also plays netflix and hulu in full HD 1080P. Maybe take a look at the Mario Kart 8 bundle that comes out in a week or so. It's a little more expensive but includes the best game of the year on any console, more accessories and a 2nd game free download code with Mario Kart 8.

Does it come with a hard copy of the games or download codes? I was looking to get the used version but do not want to risk getting a used code
