MephistoMen's Sam Sandal

This is an extraordinary pair of sandals. The European design and craftsmanship that went in these sandals is without equal. Mephisto sets a standard that no other shoe company can match. These shoes are crafted in Europe. If I know that I am going to be on my feet and walking most of the day, these are the shoes I select. I can wear these sandals 12-15 hours a day and their comfort is so outstanding that I don't even feel them on my feet. This is the sign of a quality shoe. They are expensive, but the price is well worth the comfort.. Your feet will thank you for these shoes. These sandals make you want to walk further.

Maphisto is known for comfortable shoes well made long lasting. This brand is my husband’s favorite. Unfortunately this style runs a bit narrow for him and therefore we returned them.

These are great sandals. I have the Sam sandals in black but they are 3 years old, so replaced with these. As always with Mephisto, I am not disappointed. Love them!

I wanted a few new pair of sandals for various purposes and so did something I have never done: ordered 15-18 pair of different Sandals and different sizes. E.g. I had to order smaller for these than initially. However, these were my favorite sandals for all purpose traveling. I just got back from wearing them on a two week trip around Europe and they were the only shoe I brought or wore. With or without socks. From fine restaurants and meetings to touring cities, exploring castles, day hiking in the hills of a ski resort, etc. I even once did some minor rock scrambling while hiking in some mountains. I like that they are light weight but extremely well built. My bottom line is that for a light weight, durable, comfortable sandal, they look good enough to wear whenever you'd normally wear a nice shoe, so they are the ultimate one-shoe for travel in summer months.

This is a really nice looking sandal, but I've had some issues.1. Like others the sizing can be tricky. My feet measure 10.5, which is what I get for a sandal. I first got this sandal in a 44, but was a little tight on the sides and the toes were rubbing. The width of my foot was pushing out against side of the straps. I next got the 45, which does feel better. But this gave too much room between the foot straps and my foot. More room on the sides and my toes weren't rubbing. These may be livable.2. I'm not a fan of arch support. The 44 seemed to give me more of an uncomfortable arch support than the 45. Also, the soles have an angle to them instead of a flat design.3. I've never had open heel shoe before this one. I noticed the inside seam of my pant leg would sometimes catch on the back bottom of the heel strap.Strange note: The color of the 44 was more of a semi dark dull cheap looking brown. The 45 was a very nice expensive looking chocolate brown.I really like the look of this sandal, but not sure for the price I would be happy with how they feel on my foot.

At age 71 I've worn lottsa pairs of sandals. I'm a Beatnik and as such my bag has no room for challenges to my feet. My days of long cross-town jaunts remain my singular method of exercise. These are my 5th pair of Sam's. All previous pair were properly sized at '42'. They fit really well, not at all uncomfortable and hugged my bare feet like fine gloves but...Amazon sent '43' which is not what I ordered. One mile of walking along Seattle's Burke-Gilman Trail and I felt as though I'd somehow worn Clown shoes. Rather than comfort the new Mephisto Sam's feel like one is wearing small canoes. Honestly. For the retail price over $275 all I may say is...don't. Buy from the Source. I am presently awaiting a 'Return' label. I'd much prefer a simple properly-sized replacement but...No! Amazon doesn't hear wll at all. I shall not reccomend Amazon for purchase of these finest of Sandals. I'll only buy from Mephisto. Math is obviously not a strong suite at Amazon. Properly sized the Mephisto Sam's are 5,000 miles plus and worth more than one pays.

I was initially disappointed by the rather less refined appearance of the sandals. I see that these are made in Portugal which, upon further thought, seems appropriate for fisherman sandals. I think the expense and magic are in the sloe/midsole, not in the less refined leather upper. Like other reviewers, I find the buckle very difficult to fasten because the buckle's prong has a very sloppy fit on its axle. This means that you must line things up rather than let the prong find the hole in the strap as most of us do with our pants belts. I now use a shoe horn and treat them like "slip-ons". I own other Mephisto products and am a convert to them for life. I can easily walk 2.7 miles to work in their Marlon dress shoes. In fact, I find them more comfortable to walk in than my made in the USA New Balance 990v4 running shoes.The sandals look great with jeans or shorts and you can walk in them all day long. I would buy again or recommend to a friend. 4 instead of 5 stars is because I feel the these are pushing the upper price limit for a pair of sandals and for the fastening difficulty,

I found it hard to track down any sandal that didn't have velcro on it (which gives out in a couple years and has a tendency to cling to pants legs when it starts to go). These seem very well made (I've worn them for a few weeks now) and are comfortable (nothing causing blisters, etc, as one gets with less well-made shoes). These were worth the money, IMO.
