Nice cane bolt!
This is solid! I like this version that has the "hook" to be able to hang the cane bolt when not in use.I went to a big box store and got the SAME version but realized it was a 5/8" which honestly is not only overkill for my little 4x4 gates that I am making but also heavier. I am glad I found this on Amazon because it's the same exact version of the bigger brother in terms of hardware/finish/quality, just not as heavy which in my case is a much better thing!I'll post updated pictures once I install my gates this weekend! (Taking a section of 90" fence and then making double gates out of the section)EDIT: Welp got my double gates done over the weekend and used these cane bolts. See attached pictures. Everything is solid.I did use 1/2" galvanized pipe and pounded that into the ground so that the cane bolts can go into them. VERY solid! I will update in a few months to see how the finish of the product is from being in the weather/hit with the sun ALL day.

Nice Latch
I installed two of these yesterday. So far, they work great. The instructions have specifics about distance between them and how to install, but this is what I ended up doing.1) Hold the gate in the correct position and line up the latch.2) Mark the ground where you need the latch to engage3) Move the gate out of the way and drive a 12" piece of 1/2" pipe into the ground there you marked. I used an old piece of copper water pipe I had laying around. Before driving the pipe into the ground, crush the end of the pipe so it has a sharp and and will push dirt out of the way rather than filling up with it.4) Open the gate again and engage the lock into the pipe in the ground. This should hold your brackets loosely in place.5) Adjust the brackets so the latch will engage fully and also open far enough to be out of the way.6) Screw the brackets in place.Of the two I installed yesterday, one was bare steel and the other was black (the one bought on this page). The black coating scratches easily and I think it not going to have a great deal of longevity. Other than that, it is a great latch.

Sturdy and easy to install on large privacy fence gate
Installed 2 —one on each side of heavy 10 foot double gate for 6’ tall wood privacy fence—work great, easy to install. A few notes:Did have to make a couple of modifications from the package directions. I had to adjust the bracket placement on my fence due to the gate supports. Package said put lowest support 3” from gate bottom but had to go with 4.5” and definitely had to lower the middle support 1” otherwise would not have had enough drop to make sue both top and bottom of rod would have enough support for high winds. Also when putting on the top hardware on the first rod, I was off a little from level (which was an error on my part) which caused the rod to rub and interfered with dropping it down. Fixed the screw placement and made sure to check the rod had free movement when installing the second. Found it easiest to just mark a straight line down center of post then used level to mark cross-lines—allowed me to quickly align the brackets to avoid the error made on the first one. Would recommend checking to make sure drop rod stays in both lower supports when setting height of top bracket so the rod stays in alignment in the “up” position. [pictures are from before adding the receiving pipe in the ground for the drop rod in the down position]

Solid piece of hardware, quality components
The parts and the installation are pretty straight forward. Parts are of good quality, and are coated to protect against corrosion. My plan is to simply let this cane bolt drop on my lawn to keep my shed open, but depending on how that works, I may have to put a pipe in the ground as the directions suggest (note that the pipe isn't included).Haven't completed the install yet - just templated it and have to drill a notch on my door for the bolt to clear (likely just specific to my application), but once I have some experience with the use of it, I'll post an update and some pics.

Basic, simple, gets the job done.
We just moved into a new house that has an RV access. Double wide gate with an anchor to hold one side in place with a latch to hold the other side to the anchored. We had some crazy 25+ mph winds with a big storm a few weeks ago that blew the one half of the gate open. This happened twice within a week. Decided to buy this to anchor the other half down.Simple install as i already had a masonry drill bit. Lined everything up and screwed into place. The gate has not blown open since.

There are stronger cane bolts available.
I bought this thinking that it would be strong enough for my application, but the first big wind storm we had bent the bolt right over and left my gates swinging in the wind. I found a 5/8" bolt that is way stronger; not just thicker but stronger alloy. I would suggest going with Everbilt 5/8" if you live in a windy area.

Don't even look at latch and hook locks for vehicle gates
I purchased a dual 6-foot gate system from the lumber yard I purchased my cedar fence boards from, and it came with a latch and hook locking system. Well, as anyone who's likely to buy this product knows, it doesn't take much wind on a 12' gate for a latch and hook lock to break apart.Do yourself a favor and purchase this cane bolt to keep your gate secure. I reinforced the back of my gate with a 2x4 where the connections are just to make sure it won't go anywhere, but I'm not even sure they were needed. We just had a wind storm come through with 60mph+ winds, and my gate hardly even budged.

Very satisfied with our purchase - recommended
Sturdy, well made, perfect for our needs. All hardware supplied, screws, brackets, and easy to follow instructions, though with this type of hardware, well, it ought to be one of those that installation should be self-explanatory and only a two year old would need the instructions. At any rate, we measured where we wanted to install the drop down bolt, drilled start up holes for the screws, applied some WD-40 so the screws would go in without much of a problem, and the bolt was ready to go. A good, solid product, fast delivery, easy to install, very happy with our purchase, but then it's hard to go wrong with a Stanley Hardware and Amazon combo.

not good
Very small and not strong enough for a fence, also there was no bar to put in the ground
