Champagne Supernovas: Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, and the '90s Renegades Who Remade Fashion

Prepare to dive in deep
“No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness,” Aristotle once said and it’s within this dichotomy that Champagne Supernovas thrives. Seasoned journalist Maureen Callahan takes us back to the 90s and into the footsteps of three tortured souls who inspired, revolted, and shaped a world’s culture on a scale likely, probably, never to be repeated. We meet Kate Moss, the “rough little diamond” with eyes like “E.T.,” she was on her own at 14 and by nineteen had defined the look of the times—heroin chic. And Alexander McQueen, a high school dropout tragically uncomfortable in his own skin, in the face of adversity he only worked harder and harder—yet always felt like an impostor on his own stage. And finally, Marc Jacobs, estranged from his well-to-do family, raised by his grandmother, steered by Perry Ellis, he was on his way toward a fashion empire at age 25, all thanks to a smiley face sweater. In these pages, we ride the roller coaster with them, up, up, from rags to riches until we cross the precipice of success and keep climbing, knowing all the while that what goes up, must come down…Champagne Supernovas is resplendent with powerful, efficient writing, revealing Callahan’s deep insight into the world of her story. Take, for example, this description of Kate Moss and Johnny Depp: “Both cultivated an arid cool: Kate was the accidental supermodel, Depp the punk-rock Beat poet who just happened to be a movie star. Both wore their staggering beauty with disinterest, even as their attempts to mar it with greasy hair and bad habits only underscored its imperviousness.”Prepare to dive deep into Champagne Supernovas, to live fast, fall hard, and emerge thirsty for breath. This is why Moss, Jacobs, and McQueen still captivate—and always will.

I need psychological help but the book doesn't.
So I bought this for my girlfriend, I was looking for a book of pictures of NY in the 90s preferably street pics rven more preferably street fashion pics. I didn't have a lot of success since I wanted specifically the 90s. I found one that comes close, any ways this seemed interesting as it wasn't one designers show or anything it was the people that shaped 90s fashion which I kind of forgot my whole beginning thought was the street of NY in the 90s and ended up with fashion and 90s so I bought this. My girlfriend as intelligent as she is can't focus longer than a dish remembers your middle name. I actually have pictures of us and by the 4th picture it shows her beginning to wonder of because something caught her eye she's reading. It's like having a really pretty Labrador that's kinky in the bedroom. Can't watch movies, my hobby of being a history buff is my hobby alone, but if she's ever mad at me food is an easy fix. So with that being said picture books are a blessing. I ended up just keeping this one since I already got her a couple more one including her niche interests in South Korean flight attendants. Since this one is all wordy I'm reading it and it's very interesting and full of great stories. Since I can't of made the subject of this review my gf and not the book I'll add its kind of messed up how I study and read all day long and she still knows just as much as I do and teaches me things all the time all without even knowing what a book is. I've often speculated she's an android given her looks and personality, also the USB C port on the back of her neck so maybe she just downloads wiki information. That seems like the most probable answer so I'll stick with the Occams Razor principle in this case. Anyways gf 5 starts book also 5 stars and I can close it when I've had enough.

Fashion Education
This book is a marvelous read. It can get a bit repetitive, especially the amount of times the author harps on about Kate Moss being the antithesis of 80s fashion excess (although the 90s created it's own type of damaging excesses), but I thoroughly enjoyed it.The book was definitely an education on how the fashion world works; how creative directors are vetted to run the big fashion houses; the conflicts between creating for the fashion houses and their own lines; LVMH takeover; and other info. Highly recommended.

Great read if you love fashion history with a sense of reality
Easy, great read if your looking to take a glimpse back into the 90s and learn some fashion history with a sense of reality. The book talks about the early years of Kate Moss, McQueen, & Marc Jacobs & how they became the most impactful fashion icons of their time.

This book is amazing!!!If you love fashion and its history this book is for you. Targeting Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, and Alexander McQueen, it really gets into their personal lives (sex, drugs, clubs, modelling, homelessness) I learned so many things about them that i didn't know.It also has a little picture segment where they show you old photos of the 3, either individually or even together.great book! :)

Loved this book
Loved this book, the raw grit of it all and the fact that their lives are not as glamorous as they might appear from a distance. Read it in a couple of days as couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because it seemed to end rather abrubtly, perhaps I wasn't ready for it to end ! Would highly recommend.
