Mel tillis is a bona fide entertainment legend having conquered the worlds of country music, television and film. Yet his strength remains his amazing songwriting catalogue. During the 1970's mel posted 20 us top 5 country hits, seven of which went to number one! úFor the first time on one cd, 'hitsides! 1970-1980' gathers together all of his biggest hits, over four different labels. With the addition of classic songs that became signature tunes for others (ruby don't take your love to town, detroit city) at last a career overview is available that fully reflects the importance of the artist.úFully researched liner notes point to mel's initial trials as an artist but also his almost immediate success as a hit writer for webb pierce, ray price and many others. The deluxe booklet includes startling period images and frank statements from mel as first reported in his autobiography "stutterin' boy".

Great CD
I purchased this CD "Used Like New"The rating is spot on and the CD was in perfect condition.I love Mel Tillis and this is one great CD. My only complaint was that it was a bit pricey for a used CD but looking at the other prices, some well over double the amount I paid, I was satisfied with the deal. Again, this CD is in perfect condition, everything was included and not a blemish to be found. Great Music!

A Great Mel Tillis CD
There is no longer many choices when it comes to Mel Tillis Music. My favorite record of Mel Tillis is of a live performance I think in Sam Huston Texas. My favorite song is "Who's Julie?". They did take "Detroit City" from that same album, however. I have heard other versions of "Who's Julie", but they are not as good as that live performance. It is a shame you can not get that CD. This CD also has many good songs on it. I would also like to recommend "Mel Tillis- Greatest Hits" It has the song "Commercial Affection" on it, and both CDs have the song "Heaven Everyday". If you like Mel Tillis, I think you will ejoy both of these CDs.

Eastwood Smile, Robert Redford Hair
I hate to sound like a broken record in my reviews, but here's another career retrospective that has been needed for years. Mel Tillis was a fine singer in that 1970s vein of country music, and he was an even better writer (Detroit City, now thats a song). Another victim of shoddy collections, Tillis gets his due in this nice lineup of hits and some lesser known interpretations of his compositions that hit for other singers. My favorite Tillis cut has to be "Send Me Down to Tuson," though "Coca Cola Cowboy" and "I've Got the Horse" are up there. And there are real nice liner notes. Why did an Australian company have to do this release, don't American labels understand what they have in the vaults? And again the broken record--dare we dream of a Bear Family box!

Mel Tillis: Hitsides! 1970 - 1980
This is the single most expansive collection of Mr. Tillis' music that I've ever found. All the songs are the original recordings and as far as I can tell, all of his hits and signature songs from this period are included with one exception: "Best Way I Know" is missing. That's my only disappointment, but I still highly recommend this hard-to-find album.

I've Been Waiting for this one
If you've been looking for a definitive collection of one of Country Music's premier songwriters, well, here it is. This is a Raven Records release (Australian) and I admit to be a bit hesitant to order it. But, the sound and mixing is just fine and well worth the affordable price. This CD contains 25 songs (4 bonus tracks; including "Detroit City"). The earliest Mel hits are here, including "Sawmill", "Midnight....", and "Arms of a Fool". Best of all, they're Original, not lame re-recordings. There's also a fine set of liner notes which provide a detailed bio and quick-discography review of Mel for the decade of '70-'80. Get it while it's still available.

Better Than I Ever Expected
I picked this up on a lark -- boy was I surprised! Mel was not just a gifted writer and singer, his records were cut by the very cream of the crop in terms of production, musicians, and backing vocals. There are many many hits here, most of which I had completely forgotten even existed -- great melodies like "Neon Rose," and impossible-to-get-out-of-your-mind numbers like "Melody Maker" or "Sawmill." There's not a mediocre song here.A great collection, long overdue. This is a must-have for old-school country fans.

Bright and breezy traditioal country music
This compilation contains 20 top 5 country hits, six of which went all the way to #1, one B-side (Charlie's angel, which did well enough to be listed as a notable B-side in Wikipedia) ad four other tracks, these being songs that Mel wrote, but which were initially hits for others before he recorded his own versions. Two of these four (Mental revenge, Burning memories) were released as singles and charted in the top 20, but did not make the top 5. Another track that was a cover of a song he originally wrote (I ain't never) went all the way to #1 and is included in the 20 top 5 hits mentioned earlier. For some inexplicable reason, this is the first album of Mel's that I have ever bought, either o vinyl or CD. It certainly won't be the last.
