The U.S. Navy joins the modern era of battleships...
A rising United States began to develop significant interests overseas in the last portion of the 19th century. An important decision was made, to have a world-class navy that could protect those interests. The U.S. would commission 27 modern battleships between 1895 and 1908. The first battleships would help the U.S. win the Spanish-American War. Later battleships would become the "Great White Fleet", showcasing American power through an around-the-world cruise during 1907-1909. Author Brian Lane Herder has the story in this concise Osprey New Vanguard Series book.Late to the modern battleship game, the U.S. went through significant learning curves in design, manufacture, and armament. The narrative forthrightly captures the mistakes and the successes. The text is nicely supported with period photographs and modern illustrations and diagrams. Well recommended to the student of the U.S. Navy.

Birth of a New Navy
Very interesting and informative. In short it tells how the US Navy in a period of 8 yrs went from an essentially small short range fleet to one of the most largest and technologically advanced navies in the world. This account includes not only the technology advances to the ships but also the complete reorganisation of the command structure, the vast expansion and retraining of both the Officer Corps and the Enlisted men.
