Fantastic Foods was founded in 1975 by Jim and Joan Rosen, starting as a small, vegetarian restaurant in Mill Valley, California. Jim Rosen, with a degree in philosophy and Montessori teaching experience, wanted to achieve two goals: provide healthy, vegetarian food while creating a socially conscious business. He aimed for quality and flavor, and soon the Rosens began selling their healthy and nourishing vegetarian specialties to stores and distributors with increasing success. Rosen later sold the restaurant and devoted himself to manufacturing the prepackaged soups and mixes that make up today's Fantastic Foods' family of products.

Wish I could give even more stars!
I just made my first batch of these instant refried beans, and they are really "Fantastic," just as the brand implies. Seriously, though, just as other reviewers have said, they're creamy, and simply delicious. With only two grams of fat per serving, they're fairly guilt-free, too!Preparing them couldn't be easier. Simply add 1-3/4 cups boiling water the instant refried beans in a medium mixing bowl. Mix well. Cover and let sit for five minutes. They will seem watery at first. As you stir (I used a silicone spatula to ensure no dry beans at the bottom or on the sides of the bowl), they will begin to thicken up, but still seem way too wet when you cover. Once the five minutes is up and you uncover them, voila, perfect, and I mean perfect, refried beans. If you feel any hesitation towards trying these, hopefully, this review will alleviate them. Go ahead, add them to your cart! I'll be ordering again and again and again!

Has the recipe changed?? Used to be better!
Did they change the recipe? I used to LOVE these beans, but lately they taste (and smell) different. I'm not the only one that's noticed - my family has too. I'm not sure I'll continue to buy. Fantastic Foods, if you're reading this and you changed the formula, please change it back!

Way better than canned!
I never thought I would love refried beans this much! In the past I had used canned refried beans and they either tasted bland, metallic, or both. A few years ago I discovered these and never used canned refried beans again. They are seasoned just enough, have a great texture when prepared, and never have a metallic taste because they haven't been sitting on some shelf in a can for who-knows-how-long. I use them in burritos, with corn and guacamole, and even just topped with vegan cheese (Daiya). I don't know what I would do without these delicious beans. The "subscribe & save" option here on Amazon just makes it even better because now I can get them for cheaper than in any store where I've found them. Nutritious, delicious, and cheap - it doesn't get better than this!

better than other canned refried beans I've tried...
I like these but they're too salty. When I eat them, I don't add salt to accompanying foods, for example, in a reduced carb burrito, I use these beans along with low sodium, canned black soy beans to reduce sodium and add fiber.

Keep them on hand
I crave bean burritos regularly, I guess there's something in them I need. Great idea to keep a case of Fantastic Food's Instant Refried Beans on hand. Today I had a package for the day for 780 calories total (of FF Refrieds, that is.) Three mini burritos: soft-taco size wrap tortillas filled with refried, for lunch. For dinner, two big grilled burritos: full size tortillas, fill with refried, fold and cook in skillet of veg spray, flip, makes toasty 'grilled' burrito. I think this mix is scrumptious! The texture is just as good as canned, [and not watery like Taco Bell!] and flavorful, salty and seasoned enough and I don't need to add anything. Fresh home made to compare doesn't enter into this equation because of the cook time, amount needed, inconsistent results of home made and its other variables, LOL... Anyway, I may add to FF's refrieds, some brown rice, salsa, chopped tomatoes and onions, picante, chopped fresh spinach, Green Giant mexicorn, vegan 'meats,' or any other things depending on what I have on hand and hankerin for. Most often it's been just refried and Tabasco before folding up the burrito. Hits the spot and fixes that craving very nicely until next time!

kinda bland
needs more flavoring. taco sauce, tomatoes, cayenne would all be a good addition. i suppose this is easy for campers to use.

YUM!
Started buying the beans at our local grocer, but suddenly found them no longer on the shelf. Can't say enough about how good these beans are. If you always use canned refried beans, I would recommend giving these a shot. So much tastier and healthier. Easy to make. I usually spice them up with some pepper, plenty of garlic, a little salt, and some taco seasoning (not the salt-based variety) before adding the hot water. Be forewarned, though... they do create a little bit of excitement in the lower intestinal track! But, they are beans, after all! LOL.
