Beyond the Mountains of Madness

Half of it is nice...
Beyond The Mountains of Madness, edited by Robert H. Price, has fourteen short stories within it. I would say that The Second Wave of Fear by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., Beneath The Mountains of Madness by Pete Rawlik, The Pleasure In Madness by C.J. Henderson, Garden Of The Gods by Cody Goodfellow, The Danforth Project by Stephen Mark Rainey, and Static by Will Murray were the only stories to hold my interest. In fact the last three reminded me a tad of Delta Green stories. Not a bad comparison. But that means most of the stories just did nothing for me. They didn’t expand on the ideas from Lovecraft’s novel nor did they add news ideas that I thought were interesting. Many felt like badly written fanfiction by authors trying to copy Lovecraft’s style. Lifting characters out of his stories and adding nothing new. Have to give it three out of five for the six stories I found interesting but that’s about it.

Mostly Good
An interesting book, and mostly a really good read. As with any anthology it was a mixed bag. There were a couple spectacular stories, some that were good, a couple mediocre, and one really awful one. I'm not going to go through each story, as every reader's taste and opinions are different. As far as Cthulhu Mythos anthologies go, this is a pretty good one, and I would recommend picking it up and giving it a read. The good stories far outweigh the single clunker in the mix.

Suitably Chilling Lovecraft Anthology!
Overall, an enjoyable series of takes and thoughts on 'The Mountains of Madness' tale of Lovecraft. Of the collection 'Second Death' and 'Gedney' were perhaps my favorites, followed closely by 'Garden of the Gods', 'The Pleasure in Madness' and 'A Biting Cold'. In short I think this anthology did justice to the core concepts, and would recommend it to others fond of HPL. Stay warm!

An absolute delight for lovers of the original
Absolutely a delight. At the Mountains of Madness is one of the best loved of all Lovecraft's tales and these additions to the original are a wonderful surprise. I loved at the retelling of the original, and they way these authors explained why the mountains are not visible in our current world view, a wonderful way of continuing the mythos in the Lovecraft tradition. This is one of the best collections of cosmic fiction I have read :)

A GRAND ASSORTMENT OF MADDENING TALES IT IS...
Hello, this was an absolutely amazing collection of Lovecraftian tales. Almost all of these deserve to be full length novels. The attention to detail was excellent. The writing is superb. Damn fine stuff. Thanks.

Excellent homages to Lovecraft world
I love The Mountains of Madness. It's unsettling mood never seems to fail no matter how often u read it. This anthology is beautifully balanced collection of stories that return us to the Antartic horror Lovecraft conjured so well. All seem to have been written with great affection and a sure understanding of the original. Thoroughly enjoyable book.

They really should have listened when they were warned not to go back!
I found this book to be very well written and enjoyable. I am a huge fan of the original H.P. Lovecraft story and can say they stories did the subject matter justice. Highly recommended to any HPL fans!

Abandon all hope all who venture here.
What a book, how hard must it be to try and follow the style and brilliance of Lovecraft in his warped style of horror. However the authors of this anthology have done it in an almost uncanny way.As each tail progresses thru the years after the Ill fated first expedition right up to modern times we are shown just how little we know about the mountains of madness. As we witness the futility of each explorer to unrival the frozen nightmare we hope that whoever follows on will succeed this time. The stories are a tour de force of terror and anyone who has read at the mountains of madness and wondered as I did is there more to be told will find much to enjoy here.

Plus I often like stories that other people pan
I'm enjoying it so far, but wish the text was slightly larger. That said, I'm no spring chicken and my contacts are *long* overdue for replacement and are a bit off for the current state of my eyes. I can't give a review of the quality of the stories or writing as it's the first new book I've had in a while so the novelty is probably colouring my opinion. Plus I often like stories that other people pan. "At the Mountains of Madness" is one of my favourite HPL stories, so it's nice to have a collection of stories related to it.

Very enjoyable
A good set of sequels to Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness. I wouldn't dismiss any as poor, some I found better than others, but that's an issue of personal taste. As a fan of Lovecraft since my teens (almost 30 years ago) I'd recommend this to other fans of the author and the genre he inspired.
