Goode - 8:31 15 Work Song [*] - 3:33 16 Beyond the Sea [*] - 4:20 .com On a cool February night in 1971, entertainer Bobby Darin gathered the friends, associates, and VIPs he'd flown in for the occasion to a sort of summit meeting in the Crystal Room of Las Vegas' Desert Inn. There and then, Darin again staked his claim as one of the most accomplished, versatile, and creatively unpredictable pop singers ever. Despite having traded his early teen idol incarnation for that of mature and ambitious saloon singer a decade earlier, Darin displays his uncanny knack for recasting contemporary rock and pop in his own image repeatedly here. The show may feature a loose, swinging rendition of "Mack the Knife" near the top of the set, and close with the spare, jazzy bonus version of "Beyond the Sea," but they bookend masterful takes on everything from James Taylor (a blues-charged "Fire and Rain") and BS&T's "Hi De Ho" to the Beatles (a medley of "Hey Jude"/"Eleanor Rigby"/"Blackbird"/"A Day in the Life" whose drama shames most contemporary pop covers) and a warm, elegant version of Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." His hit version of Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter" is shrewdly paired here with the poignant, Darin-penned anti-war anthem "Sing a Simple Song of Freedom" (which Hardin covered successfully), underscoring the willful genre-bending that made Darin so intriguing. -- Jerry McCulley

A review for the reviewers
After reading the reviews on this CD, I purchased it. My goodness, how much more I enjoyed each track after reading the descriptions of the songs. I don't know how you all know these stories, but THANK YOU for sharing them. My parents were musicians in an orchestra and when I started piano lessons, the first song I learned was "Mack the Knife". I was a little young when Bobby Darin passed away and am just now becoming acquainted with his music. This CD is so fun to listen to in the car, all alone. I love his banter...you feel like you're there. I first went to Las Vegas in 1974 when it was just a big town. The fun part after watching headliners, was to go sit in the lounge of whatever casino they were performing, and they would come out and sit and have a few drinks, often times right next to you. I did see Frank & Dean perform...never saw Bobby. Thanks again reviewers...

Incredible live recording by Bobby Darin
Bobby Darin as a live performer, was just as good as Elvis and possibly even a little better than Sinatra. Another reviewer described the backing band as having a "sameness house band sound" that tended to make singers who followed the "house charts" sound sort of schlocky. I think the band sounds awesome and in top form on this particular performance. Great version of Fire and Rain on here. Hi De Ho, and Chain of Fools. Incendiary versions of Dylan's "I'll be your baby Tonight" , Tim Hardin's "If I Were a Carpenter" and Bobby's "Simple Song of Freedom" and "Mack the Knife". They're selling this cheap as heck on Amazon, so what are you waiting for?

Bobby Darin Live at the Desert Inn
This cd is wonderful, for anyone who is a Bobby Darin fan or even if you are not, this cd is a must have. Bobby Darin was such a masterful entertainer, this was recorded lived at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, has great songs on it and the monologue is tremendous. Bobby's rendition of Mack the Knife is as always perfectly done, he does a Beatles medley which could have only been done any better by the Beatles themselves, Your love keeps Lifting me Higher is just amazing. Very well done cd by the most extraordinarily versatile vocalist and entertainer the world has ever known..

Kevin Spacey was much better
I still love the old music and Bobby Darin but Kevin Spacey was excellent in his role of Bobby Darin. The liberties that he took in the movie only made it better. Spacey acknowledged his mother at his performance at the Desert Inn. Kevin threw that in and caught the person playing his mother by surprise. Beyond the Sea is Spacey's role as Bobby Darin on DVD.

Bobby Darin Live! at the Desert Inn
This is an amazing show on cd. I have never been able to find it on LP, long out of print. I had the privilage to have seen Bobby Darin as a kid in Las Vegas, and to relive this performance, one of his best, is to send chills down my spine. He put heart and soul into this show and you can feel how Bobby Darin works off the audience on this performance. The voice, in perfect form. I absolutely love it. Jerry

Bobby Darin at His Best!
Bobby was at his best when performing live, and this performance certainly lives up to that.

Very Soulful
If you like Blue Eyed Soul and Acoustic Folk music with political undertones this recording is for you. If you expect Bobby Darrin light jazz music forget it although "Mack The Knife" and "Beyond The Sea" are included. His ability to do various styles of music is amazing. This compact disc has great stereo sonics. Also, it has nice linear notes.

Bobby Darin Shares His Soul with You
From a crooner to an extraordinary folk singer. I listen for good Live performances and this one is more than good. He puts his heart and soul in these songs. If you want only one live album this is it. He sings to your soul. Very few performers can attain that.

An ear opener!
I was born a few years after Bobby Darin, but strangely enough never paid much attention to him. I guess he "drowned" in all the other singers of my teenage years. I hear this CD, and it's like: WOW! what a singer. Of course, I was aware of his swinging versions of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the sea", but I never knew, how versatile he was; much more than my favorite singer Frank Sinatra. All the songs here are fabulous, and should I pick a few favorites, it will have to be Darin's Beatles Medley, "If I were a carpenter", and on top of this his verson of "I'll be your baby tonight".This is great - and I have already ordered another Bobby Darin CD!
