Disappointed
This is just such a boring read. Lengthy and so much empty dialog. I gave up reading it 60% into the book. Couldn't even force myself to finish this sadly developed story line. Left me wondering what DP was thinking when she released this. Definitely not her standard quality.

Would someone please for the love of heaven tell Diana Palmer that NO ONE (except, apparently, her) uses the term "cartoon movies" to refer to animation?! For heck's sake, not all animation is cartoons! You cannot accurately call 'Finding Nemo', 'Tangled', 'Toy Story' or 'Shrek', "cartoons"! Get with the times woman!Aside from that pet peeve, the other really jarring thing about the book was the author's constant descriptions of Minette Raynor as "flushing". The woman flushes at the drop of a hat.

Don't do it!!
This was one of the worst romance novels I have ever read. Long, lengthy dialogue that meant nothing, no real drama between the hero and heroine, overly-done lovey-dovey clique scenes......it was terrible. At times during the book I would flip through the pages of continuous dialogue without reading a word just to get through it....and guess what? It didn't even matter. I did not miss a thing because the characters talking did not bring anything of importance to the story.I want my 9 bucks back!! (Which by the way was way too much money in the first place. How did this get published? Does the publisher even care about content???)

Best Diana Palmer in years!
PROTECTOR is the latest "Long Tall Texan" novel by Diana Palmer. Yes, it is overpriced even at the Kindle price. I'm not sure why Harlequin publishing has taken to doing hardcovers of Palmer's books. I gave the book 4 stars because it is the best Palmer novel in years. Palmer apparently has finally listened to her readers. The hero is not a woman hater or verbally abusive to the heroine (at least in this book). Both hero and heroine aren't afraid of sex. All that said, it is still an old-fashioned romance with a virgin heroine and all the Diana Palmer hallmarks (historical trivia, gamer lingo, scaly reptiles and mercenaries who seem to be overgrown boys).Carson is a stalwart sheriff taken into the home of old enemy Minette after an assassination attempt to recuperate. They quickly overcome their differences and romance and intrigue ensue as Minette is the unknown daughter of a "nice" drug lord.I began reading Palmer as a teenager and the ongoing connected stories have been a guilty addiction. I've read them all no matter how trite and disconnected from modern reality more than a few have been. Fans of Palmer will like this one. She brings in many characters from other "Long Tall Texan" stories and the plot holds together. If it you are looking for a good old-fashioned romance with alpha heroes and women happy to provide home cooking, sit back and enjoy.

Great Book
Five stars for Diane Palmer books

sometimes difficult
This plot was a little hard to follow because of all the familial connections and references to others'. Once again the publish date was misleading and I will have to return to a written list of books read to be sure not to buy the same book over and over again. Lots of other authors and publishing companies are doing the same; misleading by virtue of a new publishing date..it is infuriating.

UGGGGG horribly written story... The only word that comes to mind is ridiculous!!!!
This is typical for Diana Palmer these days, unfortunately. Her "hero" is unreasonable in his hatred and treatment of the "heroine" to the point of ridiculousness!!!! They are all "mercenaries" or from law enforcement and NONE of them every tell anyone ANYTHING.... however, they speak openly to everyone about EVERYTHING.... THERE ARE NO SECRETS IN JACOBSVILLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure glad our real national security is not run like this!! Also, I don't mind her bringing others back from former stories but sometimes I feel that these are more reunion books for them than an opportunity to tell a new story. Finally, I do not think you could EVER do enough good in the world to try to justify being a drug lord. It is quite ridiculous for her to attempt to turn one into a nice guy and make him a model citizen on one side of the border and drug lord on the other.

back to basics
The majority of the story is back in Jacobsville so many of the much loved characters make an appearance as well as some who haven't been heard of for a long time. This is Hayes Carson's story and it takes quite a few twists and turns and even in the last chapter you cant relax as there are events that I think are to set up a few more books in the series. The book jacket says Minette is DEA but after reading the story I can say that she isn't but there are ties to DEA in there. At one point it gets bit confusing with so many of the alphabet agencies getting mentioned. This is definitively a vast improvement on the last book in the series "Courageous" which had the main characters missing for most of the pages. It is interesting to see how Hayes's attitude to Minette changes over the course of the book and how this is influenced by other characters. The life stories of some of the characters get updates and you find out who has had kids etc.I got the audio book version as I am slightly dyslexic so find reading hard. First time listening to this narrator but he is ok, his voice isn't jarring at all but not up to Phil Gigante standards! Overall it is nice to see Diana Palmer getting back to basics and putting the main characters front and centre in the plot. Its been a long wait for Hayes's story but it has been well worth it!!!

Hayes & Minette
Hayes is a sheriff in a small town and we see him get shot in the first pages of this story and consequently moved to his worst enemy to recuperate. Minette owns a newspaper and had always had feelings for Hayes but he blames her for something that she never did. But now, living in her house, surrounded by her family he starts to doubt his claims. Due to secrets of her birth, they are both kidnapped and held hostage by a drug lord. This is a great read packed with action, adventure and romance. Highly recommended

I just loved it!
I finally got my hands on this book! It's great to finally go up-close and personal on Hayes Carson! He was always strutting by the other stories, but his character needed a story sooooo much! And Minette his the perfect counterpart to him...by the way, don't to read the end cover, the info is all wrong about the girl! She's not DEA! And the scene in the kitchen....wow, just wow...against the wall? I want a guy like that for myself!

Hayes and Minette
He has blamed her for his brother's death, though she does not know it, her true father is a drug lord. He supplied the drugs that killed a Bobby; so though she has never understood why he hates her. She has always loved him, so naturally looks after him, when he is shot.

NOT FOR ME
I love Diana Palmers books but to be frank, i found this boring. When she started going into depth about drug cartels I found myself skipping pages. The story just didnt grab me and half way through I stopped reading it.
