These tools are great! Nice quality and user friendly. And pretty sharp out of the box.

I was excited to see fishtail chisels at such a reasonable price. Like a few other reviewers, I did have some issues with the edges - in my case, the actual cutting edges. I reached out to Schaaf Tools, and heard from them the next day! One could not ask for better customer service. I received beautiful replacements - each one perfect - and am very pleased. It is very refreshing to deal with a company that stands so solidly behind their product!

They are good quality. Sharpening was required, which is no big deal, but one of the fishtails has an uneven edge grind. For now, I left it uneven and sharpened it, but I'll have to regrind the edge. I still gave the set 4 stars because of the good quality and price.

They came sharp and with a small canvas role. They have really helped in bowl carving.

The price was very competitive and the tools are well made but leather stropping with compound makes them extremely sharp and a joy to use. Although they were sharp on delivery, the carving I do, hand carved letters, requires the chisels to be so sharp so that they result in paper thin shavings just by pushing the chisel through the wood. When you buy these you must buy something to sharpen them or you will be disappointed

I bought these to carve my first sign - on Bubinga, a very hard exotic wood (I recommend starting out with softer wood if your first attempt). I appreciate the manufacturer statement to the effect of ‘don’t buy these if you don’t expect to need to sharpen your tools’ - that’s truth for any kind of non disposable blade. Aside from the value, I simply appreciated the honesty - and absurdity that they even had to say that. Of course- just like a kitchen knife, or a chisel - you have to sharpen these periodically. Totally expected. So buy this - and while you’re at it, buy some sharpening stones. You’ll need them with this, any chisel, and your kitchen knives anyway.

Pros: • Comfortable to hold for extended periods. • Sizes marked on handles Cons: • Not carving sharp out of the box. • Don't hold an edge very well. Needs to be honed more frequently than other brands. • Schaaf 'brand' etched on shafts. Better quality tools etch sizes on shaft in case handles break or wear out. Not for beginners who don't know how to sharpen steel, and not for more experienced carvers because they don't hold an edge very well. Basically overpriced because of unearned hype.

Buyer is Quality Control I eventually purchased all three (4,7 and 12 piece) sets because there is nothing comparable in quality in that price on the market that I could find. I started with a Mastercarver 10 piece and regret not purchasing the Schaaf 12 piece instead. There were some issues with some of the Schaaf tools that were beyond just needing commissioning tuning and sharpening. Schaaf Tools' Customer Service was very responsive and did replace 3 tools at no charge. (Initially, I had to return an entire 7-piece set after receiving a severely bent V-tool, because individual replacements weren't available during periods of preventive virus measures.) So, out of 23 tools, 4 (17%) had significant defects and needed to be replaced. Most of the issues were with the #11 gouges and V-tool in the 7 piece set. Some of these defects were: 1) Bent blade. Some were slight, but one was 10-15 deg.s out of true. 2) Completely rounded bevel corners. 3) Nonsymetrical forging that produces varrying height and thickness between the two halves of the blade. 4) Chips in the cutting edge. Overall, I recommend Schaaf Tool sets because of the value and responsive customer service, and ST's willingness to replace below standard tools.

I found your site by searching for FISHTAIL CARVING CHISELS which are not available from UK manufacturers. I make heavy bench seats from 100 mm. slabs of green English Oak for public woodlands and these tools are perfect for my needs and modestly priced compared to UK manufacturers. - Bill Ross, Scotland.

For the money I paid really good value, takes and keeps a sharp edge. Would I buy this brand again, yes.

Not terrible but be prepared to spend some time with your stones to get them shaped properly. The interior convex grind is quite rough, and the exterior concave grind is not aligned with the interior grind so the shape is out of wack. Not fixable by stropping alone.
