Two CD compilation that spans the singer/songwriter's entire career. A troubadour and master storyteller, Al Stewart's timeless songs have earned him a revered place in contemporary music. The Scottish singer/songwriter is perhaps best known for his hit song 'Year of the Cat' but there is much more to his extensive 24 album back catalogue than one song and this compilation gives the highlights of his career from his first album released in 1967 Bedsitter Images through to 2005's a Beach Full of Shells. 30 tracks including 'Time Passages', 'On the Border', 'Nostradamus Pt. 1 & Pt. 2' and, of course, 'Year of the Cat'. EMI. 2006.

A Piece of Yesterday served Ala' Carte
This new 2CD set, just released features about two or so songs per Album that Al Stewart has published thoughout his entire career. From Bedsitter Images, Zero She Flies, Orange of the early days to the breakout Past, Present & Future, to fame in Year of the Cat, Time Passages and relative obscurity in Last Days of the Century to unique work in a 30's style album and Down in the Cellar and back again on a Beach Full of Shells. This CD set has some of the best selections. Included are Live recordings of Nostradamus and Roads to Moscow. One of my personal favorites from the early days, "Manuscript" is included in this set and it is a very pleasing sampling of a great productive career. Al is still plugging away and his most recent work "A Beach Full of Shells" at age 60 is actually one of his better compositions, so we can't count Al out until he decides to stop touring and writing. May he live long!

Great Songs BUT...
I have always thought that a compilation from Al Stewart would be a waste. I have reviewed other CDs by him as extremely enjoyable. The songs on this CD are well chosen and excellant representations. So what's my problem with this CD.Al Stewart has planned his CDs so well in the past that these random cuts do not convey the mood and mastery of his full CDs. I am a true fan and want everyone to experience Al's music but you really miss his real synergy of a complete album. All the parts are better a s a whole.Of course , with many compilations, my favorite individual songs are not there. Modern Times is not represented well.If you have not heard Al, please, buy this CD. If you have heard Al, you know what I am talking about.

Good selection and good value
This 2 CD set is a good cross-section of the best (1-3) tracks from most of Al Stewart's LP/CDs. I have about half the LP/CDs from which tracks were selected and have few complaints about the tracks chosen.Minor problems are that the two tracks from the first LP (Bedsitter Images) were taken from the revised (and semi-ruined) version where strings had been added (as a comment on the box set of the first three LPs had warned). The two tracks in this set gives a good feeling for the destruction caused by this addition and gives those wondering whether to buy the set of the first three LPs in CD form good reason for not doing so unless they really (only) want the second and third LP in CD form.Another minor problem is that no date information is given about the recording date of the tracks. In the case of tracks from the original LP/CDs this isn't a major problem as the notes clearly state which tracks come from which LP/CD but there are three live performances included and it would be very useful to know if these were (as I suspect in at least two cases) fairly new live performances or live performances from around the date of the LP/CD recordings. But in total the good quality and number of the re-mastered tracks and the good value for money mean I give it five stars (even if I thought the rhythm guitar track dominated the re-mastered third track (first CD) and virtually swamped the lead guitar interludes which I remember - perhaps wrongly - as souring above the ryhthm guitar on the Love Chronicles LP)

Not perfect, but currently the best compilation available
Probably the best Al Stewart compilation album. There are quite a few surprising omissions of course, but makes a good stab at covering a very productive career.

An excellent compilation!
A really well chosen compilation, with the added bonus of the excellent live version of Nostradamus.
