While replacing a broken light fixture above a doorway I realized that there was no kind of junction box, only very old wiring coming through a hole in the plaster. This box/pan was exactly what I needed to get the job done quickly. The box is mounted to a stud, the wiring is secure inside the box, the fixture is mounted securely to the box, I didn't have to do anything to the wires or the hole they were already coming through, and the fixture doesn't stick out too far.
