A big improvement over harness and choke chain
My two Herb Springer dog collars black metallic size large arrived today and I was very anxious to try them out. I have three dogs; an older black lab who I have no problem walking, and two much younger dogs slightly over a year old. The two collars are for the younger ones. One is a male Boxador (71lbs) and the other a female Foxhound/Border collie mix. The male has been using a choke chain collar and the female a harness. Previous walks have been a real struggle keeping control of both young dogs! Especially when other dogs, rabbits, and/or prairie dogs are encountered. After my Herb Springer dog collars arrived we went on our first walk. The results were absolutely amazing! Instead of the two younger dogs being out of control our walk was actually very pleasant! We passed two other dogs who previously had been a problem when it came to keeping my dogs under control. No problem at all this time and remember I'm walking another dog besides my two trouble makers. My walk was actually very pleasant which is something new for me. These collars appear to be very well made so I will add a review on durability at a later time. Right now these Herb Springer dog collars appear to be a very good investment!

This makes controlling a 80 lb Husky dog very easy and well made!
I thought this item was expensive so I was thinking about not buying but I am glad I did as I have a Husky dog and can be tough to control but this collar works extremely well and even works better than the harnesses which I spent almost $100 for! This item is very well made and you can get a knock off and save a few bucks but with this one you can tell that it is well made and will last a lifetime and I feel safer knowing that my dog is not going to break out of this and run in the street! Well worth the cost and would highly recommend to all other dog owners who love your pets!

Life-changing for our German shepherd
We got this collar in the mail and I was a little hesitant to use it because I thought it looked mean but I decided to give it a whirl and it has been life-changing! My German shepherd is 80 pounds and I am 7 months pregnant and this has made our walks SO.MUCH.BETTER. She stays right by my side and isn't pulling me! This leash doesn't hurt her because she isn't crying, it is simply sending her a message when she veers off or tries to pull. Once she tries that she feels the little prong and looks back at me and comes right by my side. It is very well made! My only criticism and maybe I am just missing something is opening it to put it on and off of my dog - I have just been pulling up one of the prongs and then piecing it back together onto her neck. not sure if this is right?! seems like there should be an easier way. overall, we love it and it has been life-changing walking our dog with this collar!

A Life Saver
I just had to write this review because this product has had such a profound affect on my life and I needed to share with others who might be in desperate situations like mine. 15 months ago we adopted a 112 pound mastiff mix from a local shelter. Although we leash trained him right away we just couldnโt break him of charging when he saw a cat or another dog walking by. I tried everything from the no pull harness to the gentle leader and nothing worked. I was told to use positive reinforcement when he saw a trigger but I couldnโt even get his attention in the slightest when he was seeing red let alone get him calm enough to take a treat! It got to the point where I was afraid to walk him because he was just so strong when he jolted I was afraid he would get away and hurt someone or something. Not walking him only created additional bad behaviors at home and I was honestly ready to find him a new home. As a last resort I called a behaviorist in who recommended I try this collar in addition to the other training he wanted me to do. Iโve only been using it a week now and the difference is amazing. When he starts to get distracted Iโm able to quickly give him a command and get his attention with a very slight correction, doesnโt take much at all. Our walks are so peaceful and it has made it so easy to reinforce commands with him while walking. Today we passed dogs barking behind gates, dogs barking on leashes, people on bikes, cats (all things that would have previously sent him into a tizzy) but I was able to quickly give him the heel, sit and watch me command and there were no issues, amazing! This as a tool along with the behavior modification plan seriously kept my dog in the home with me and I am so grateful.

sturdy and reliable, but not easy to remove from the dog's head
Our previous one from a cheaper brand broke. This was very scary as our dog ran after a squirrel, almost hit by a car. So we were extremely disappointed as we never envisaged this would happen. So we decided to go for a real brand, and higher quality. The price is more than worth it and this is an excellent product. A bit difficult to get it off our Labrador's head as it has spikes. He does not like it when we remove it. But the quality is excellent, so worth it and we can rely on the sturdiness. We highly recommend this collar. PS make sure you buy the real one, not the one with the same name but not having the little red label.

Efficient training tool
I have been training my 9 months old doberman puppy with a martingale collar for at least 6 months. As he grows stronger every day he pretty much has been ignoring the pressure applied by the collar when he pulls or bolts to something. I wish I had started him on a prong collar sometime ago. The first moment I put on the Herm Sprenger he noticed he would not be able to ignore it. I don't yank the leash at all, and have spent good time teaching him leash pressure, but I guess he was strong enough to ignore the one applied by the martingale. Now, with the Herm Sprenger he is showing that he has learned very well how to release the leash pressure. Our walks have become much more pleasant and a time for good training and enjoyment as I do release him several times from the heeling position. My back and shoulders are so much reliefed. The black collor is a great match to his black fur and doesn't make the collar to stand out. I do recommend the product as it seems to be of great quality stainless steel. However, please make sure you use the tool as a training tool, not as a punishment one. Teach your dog how to walk on a loose leash, and fit the collar properly snug at the top part of the dog's neck.

Authentic Herm Sprenger.
After removing the previous HS fur saver chain collar that was on our rehomed GSD which he outgrew (his previous owners gifted that and left it on him), I figured why not try and use a leather/chain martingale collar on him. I WAS WRONG. Our pup who is trained in personal protection and bite work was trained with the good stuff, meaning stainless steel Herm Sprenger collars. You name them and he's had it on him at one point. When we applied his new collar, he took the martingale collar like it was nothing to him since there really wasn't any sort of "weight" to it. Any correction we did with it, I swear he'd laugh in his head and pull us like he was a sled dog or he'd try and choke himself as much as he could which didn't work since there was only so much correction the martingale did that it pretty much acted like a flat collar. Then I went with a martingale and a body harness. Once again he turned into a sled dog pulling us, the only difference was that his body harness made him look like a super cool working dog. After extensive research on a prong collar versus using a chain, I ended up purchasing the prong since it was a lot less hurtful on the trachea compared to a regular choke chain collar. I haven't took him out for a walk yet, but with some heel commands in the backyard our dog has actually listened and has resisted the urge to pull with this collar. Having the slight weight of the stainless steel around his neck makes him know that it's time to focus/listen. Of all the useless collars, harnesses we spent money on these past few months I really wish I had thought of the prong collar before hand. To be honest I was pretty biased to it at first thinking that it was inhumane, but the more I researched the more I realized that as a responsible dog owner this was an investment worth having. Like I said, do your research about prong collars and know how/where to correctly apply it on your dog. When out in public now and I see an owner have a prong incorrectly placed, I try and tell them to fix it and get the correct fit to get the actual effect of how a prong collar works. My dogs neck measured at 19 inches, when I put this on him it was actually too big on him. I only had to remove 2 links to get the correct fit. I actually regret purchasing a few extra links since I didn't even need them. Of course being 3.2mm, it could be a bit tough to remove/apply for those who have small hands like myself. My husband has no problem putting it on, but I struggle a bit trying to pinch the links together. Our collar was purchased from 101outlet if I remember correctly, and it was an authentic Herm Sprenger collar that we received. Our also came with the swivel D-link, I had no preference to whether it was the double O rings or not. It works either way. No complaints what so ever.

Links Can Easily Come Unhooked
First the good: The collar has worked wonders with my rescue German Shepherd Dog. He has a strong urge to chase and wanted to be out front pulling on the leash. He would be on constant alert for squirrels, rabbits and other dogs. I tried both martingale and choke chain style collars first, but corrections with these didn't phase him. When I tried the pronged collar, it was like night and day. A gentle correction was all it took, and I got the chance to praise him. After just a few minutes, he was healing like a champion. Our walks went from misery to pleasure for both of us. Now the bad: A good shake or a scratch and the links can come unhooked. Now I have a loose dog with an urge to chase. I have also read that rescue dogs sometimes get a yen to go looking for their previous people if they get loose. Fortunately, I have not seen this behavior in him. If the collar comes loose, re-hook the link and spread those tines a bit more. When it happened a second time, I knew that I needed to check all the other links. Make sure they're wide enough apart to prevent unhooking, but not too wide to decrease their effectiveness.
