What is the width of this unit? I'm seeing different numbers different places.

As another seller has mentioned, the seat width is 41-3/4" and the overall width is 44-7/8."

Do these chip? How does the wood keep up?

I've had these for a year or so in a work setting either constant use. So far there a no chips or scratches. I don't think the legs are made of actual wood though. The chair itself is pretty light weight. Overall this seat has held up great. My only complaint is it it light so it slides easily.
