Most Thoughtful Guide to Substitute Teaching Avalable
This book is gives you real and well thought out advice. Sometimes it can be hard to get clear advice about how to prepare and be professional when coming into a classroom as a substitute teacher. This book has solid actionable advice, not generalities to help stay confidant, compassionate and in charge in a classroom. The only thing I would say is that some of the advice you will needs to slightly updated such as the advice to keep a pad by your phone for calls and to use note cards to keep track of school info. Many people now carry their phones and your computer might be easier than those note cards but the planing and preparedness are exactly correct. Also, the authors have a realistic view of children's potential to test limits and has dependable and specific ideas to help you be on the ball to direct them back to their school related tasks.

Covers Key Issues But Mostly for Elementary School Level
An experienced senior administrator at a highly-rated school district recommended this particular substitute teaching how-to handbook; so I bought it. I cannot compare it to other substitute handbook how-to's because I haven't read any of them. But, based on my preparatory training and classroom experience to date, I can confirm that it stresses the key issues I face daily as a substitute and would also face as a new full-time teacher: Classroom management, implementing the lesson plan even when it's not clear or too short, and employment rules and do's & don'ts.The only drawback is that most of the classroom management and lesson plan ideas seem to fit solely in elementary school, K-5, classrooms. This leaves me feeling stranded when I want to apply its universally sound classroom strategies because I can't find many implementation ideas suited to middle and high school students, where I substitute and hope to full-time teach.

Great resource for substitute teachers
This book is a great resource for substitute teachers. It provided a lot of activities with little to no prep for all grade levels along with tips and tricks for substitute teachers. The layout of the book was very easy to read.

Great book for reviewing
This book was just what I needed for taking the sub assessments. It is basically a word for word review of the online study guide. Which makes it helpful while taking the assessments.Although it is not the book that is recommended on the site, (they want you to get the newest edition), this book got the job done and was a lot less cheaper than the one they want you to get on the site. It took only a couple of days to deliver and since I had at least a month or so to get the assessments done, it came right on time.I passed my assessments and I'm good...

Substitute Teacher Handbook K-12
Great book, gives lots of information that would also help the classroom teacher. This book offers advice on how to manage classrooms, alternative activities in case the teacher fails to leave enough work for the class to do, filler activities that activate critical thinking, positive ways to change behavior in the classroom, etc. It also tells the substitute teacher how to create a "sub pack" that can be brought to each assignment, making the sub look professional as well as ensure that substitute teachers have what they need for the day, both personally and professionally. Great advice in many areas!

Practical Magic!
This book is the best resource out there, and is currently being used at the local university. I am an education major and my campus uses this edition as well. There are many helpful bulleted lists for quick reference while in the classroom. Several supply freebies are printed up just waiting to Xeroxed st your convenience. Still, the best features are it's ease of reading and application of little details that make all the difference. This is the kind of "practical magic" you don't receive from a formal education that makes all the difference come game time.

GREAT handbook for starting out as a SUB
I am just starting out as a sub for grade school and wanted to be well prepared. I saw great reviews on this particular book and decided to go for it. I was not dissapointed. It has a lot of good tips and includes some handy filler/emergency tactics such as games and pages to copy to keep the day running smoothly. It also has lots of handy information that is grade specific so no matter where you go, you will have a reference and appropriate backup to refer to. I highly recommend it.
