Q: What does the tip mes sure across the piece that holds the pad on?

Not sure about that answer, but what I can tell you is the shank is to small to fit in the Dremel. I tried putting tape on the shaft to shim it out but the shank bent and came flying out. This product is complete crap! Don't buy!

Q: How woukd theses work on polishing a single crankshaft journal?

They might work for polishing a small spot, but personally I would use crocus cloth if I had to hand polish a crank.

Q: what is the diameter of the shank?

not sure. i know it uses a large collet for a dremel.
