good quality, works well, makes a great gift!
The seller was Amazon Warehouse Deals. I paid 120 bucks including shipping. The item was marked "used--very good".There were some signs of prior use (scuffs on/under the front bumper, and some dust), but I would agree that the truck was in "very good" condition. It looks like someone may have purchased it, tried it out, didn't like it, and returned it to Amazon. All of the original items were there.I tried a few test runs. The truck works well. Forward, reverse, turning all work well. The truck appears well made. The handheld remote control radio is well designed and responsive. I like that the radio and the truck receiver are already bound to each other. This truck is ready to run...just like it says; insert/charge batteries and go!As other folks have noted, the receiver on the truck does not appear to be waterproof. On the Redcat Racing website, it says the receiver is "splashproof".Under the hood, there seems to be a good balance of metal versus plastic parts. Unless you plan to use this truck on very tough terrain or do stunts with it, it looks like it should hold-up well.I also like that you can purchase upgrades and replacement parts online...either at the Redcat Racing website, or at a dealer website, or on Amazon or eBay. To find a dealer in your area, visit the Redcat Racing website and click on "Find a Dealer".Based on another Amazon reviewer's suggestion, I replaced the stock plastic spur gear with a metal one: Redcat Racing 64T Steel Spur Gear 11184 . It took a little doing, but it wasn't too tough. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver, a Flathead screwdriver (for the E clip), and a 2mm hex wrench (for the drive cup). While removing screws to install the metal spur gear, I noticed that there are at least 3 types of screw lengths and threads (even for screws on the under carriage). So, if you do maintenance on it, I recommend grouping the screws together, so you know where they came from (when it comes time to reinstall them).I also adjusted the suspension on the front and rear, so that the truck will bottom-out if it hits the ground real hard. To hear why this is important, visit youtube and search for qIO6KwVOM4Y. Youtube user ramrod340x does a good job of explaining and showing how to adjust the suspension. It's also easy to do.It came with a 7.2v 2000mAh battery. I upgraded the battery to a Redcat Racing HX-3800MH-B 3800 Ni-MH Battery-7.2V with Banana Connector .I purchased some Duratrax Kwik Trak Racing Cones (6-Piece) .I purchased a better charger, since the "travel charger" that was included with the truck seemed cheap and other reviewers complained that it didn't last long. Here is the better charger: Tenergy Universal Smart Charger for NiMH/NiCd Battery Packs (6V - 12V) . The Tenergy charger does NOT come with banana connectors, so I also had to buy this: Redcat Racing ST-TAMFTO4B Version 4.0 Female Tamiya to Banana Adapter .I also purchased a Tactic 4-Cell AA Battery Holder with Futaba J Connector . The receiver and controller that come with a new truck are already bound together. The only reason to use this item is to bind a different/replacement receiver or hand-held controller. During the bind process, this battery pack should be plugged into the VCC slot on the receiver. For additional instructions on how to bind a receiver and controller, see the quick start guide in the first comment to this review.Minus 1 star because the owners manual and instructions are poor. There is nothing to tell me what the controls on the handheld remote do (or what the abbreviations mean). Although I don't need to bind the radio to the receiver, there are no instructions on how to do that. What are the extra items for? (5-inch tube--for antenna, shock spring spacers, bind plug/control) And there is no explanation of how to charge the battery (e.g., how long? what does the LED indicator on the charger mean? etc.). How do you turn-on the truck? The on/off switch is somewhat hidden and black in color. Simple stuff, unless you are new to RC. I can usually figure out stuff on my own, or I check online; but when I give this as a gift to someone who is new to RC, then I have to provide additional help (or write-up my own documentation). For people who are new to RC, or who are giving this truck to someone else as a gift...I created my own quick start guide using OpenOffice Writer. The guide includes instructions that are specific to my gift, so not everything is applicable to a brand new truck. For example, I purchased extra batteries, a quality charger, extra body clips, and 4-cell AA battery pack in case the owner wants to bind a different receiver/controller to the truck. To download my quick start guide, see the first comment to this review. After downloading it, you can use OpenOffice to change it to meet your needs.Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. This is a Christmas gift for a boy age 11.The truck also comes in red: Redcat Racing Electric Volcano EPX Truck, Red

Good buy
Bought as a gift for my adult son - he loves it, but has had to routinely adjust, replace several small parts to keep steering working.

Great service from manufacturer
Had an issue with steering after getting it up and running. The manufacturer got new parts sent and it was back up and running. great service!

I think its a great starter vehicle
This was my first RC truck, I think its a great starter vehicle. It isn't a bank killer, and I feel it performs pretty well. I gave it 4 stars because it was missing a couple screws out of the bottom of the chassis. Not a big deal to me, but QC could have been better, even considering the price point. I ordered some screws on Amazon here for a nominal price and replaced the missing ones.As far as performance goes, I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I was very happy with it. I did a lot of research before ordering this and I am glad I did. I have been pretty rough with it, crashing it into curbs and trees, and also did some jumps. Over the past several months I have managed to bend a shock, break the front bumper, and break off a part of the plastic chassis where the bumper mounts. I have replaced the chassis with an aluminum one, and replaced 4 of the shocks with aluminum ones. Also purchased a new bumper. After my research I was prepared for breakages like this knowing it was part of the hobby to replace and upgrade parts. I never had issues with any electronics, they all worked flawlessly. I did have the servo saver come loose, and I used some loc-tite and re-tightened it. I haven't had any further issues with it.I purchased another battery to run it with, a 5000mah NiMh battery. I think the runtime on the stock battery was about 10 minutes or so.Recently, have upgraded to a brushless motor (3500) and a 60amp ESC. I also upgraded the pinion and spur gear to steel ones. Will soon purchase a Lipo battery for it. I do expect to break more parts with the speed upgrades, but it is very fun to work on. I was also pleased to find you can order aluminum replacement parts for this directly from China for pennies on the dollar. The part numbers are different but you can find them easily with an auction site search. They are typically listed with an HSP part number, if you search for the Redcat aluminum part number, sometimes it will come up in an item along with an HSP part number, then do a search for the HSP part number and you can find some really good deals. I have a spreadsheet with all the part numbers I found if anyone is interested.

Really good... once you get it up and running.
We understand this is not a toy but a hobbyist RC Car, albeit an entry-level version. However, getting it working threw up some complications.First the charger. The amazon.com reviews *do* suggest the charger isn't very good. We plugged it, in attached the battery and the 'charging' light came on for 15 mins. We then got 5 mins of use where the car moved sluggishly until it died.On recharge no light came on. Although it has these lights the charger seems to be a trickle charge so we're not sure whether the charger or battery is broke ***BUT*** we knew we would be replacing these anyway (just not over Xmas period of course). Another problem. The Instructions are terrible and don't match the car. I suspect they are kept from the US version of the car. YouTube etc are nearly all US based as well. As we're beginners we *could* have assumed we needed batteries with 'Banana' connectors as that's what everything was saying. These seem to be VERY hard to find in UK and/or VERY pricey. Getting them sent from US was pricey and would take some time.Luckily we noticed that the connectors had been changed to Deans. This made things a bit easier. Went for a Smart battery charger with Tamiya plug and a battery with Tamiya and Deans adapters.Charged it up, stuck it in the car and now runs REALLY well.Bit of a steep learning curve, which wasn't helped by the documentation but can, finally, say the car exceeded our expectations.

Much better that what you get at the toy store
A bit more expensive that "toy" grade RC truck, however it comes with higher quality parts which are waterproof. Is it also easily upgradable and repairabled with parts available here on amazon.2000Mah battery is fast but rather short runtime (~10-15min), for kids the Hexfly 5000Mah will be a great upgrade which will bring the runtime to ~30+ min and also make the truck a bit faster. For teenagers this truck also support Lipo battery which required more care but will make this truck fly (almost).Great entry level hobby grade RC. Bought another one for me with Lipo battery and its a blast to run.

Not bad for a budget truck
I've owned a blackout sc now for a few months which I'm really happy thought I'd treat myself to this truck all I can say is you get wot you pay for a few points to note the body sits very high on the truck didn't think I'd have to be cutting a new body round the bumper brakets to lower it and if you want to run brushless in it your need to replace all the plastic and copper bushings for bearings didn't have this with the black out sc I guess you get wot you pay for I would tell anyone to think before buying this truck it's a tuck on a budget but once you put a bit of time and money into it it not bad

good top speed, terrible starting.
tried using it in some snow and it would barely move and then started to cut in and out like the battery was dead after like 2 minutes. good for flat dry ground thats about it. also hate how going from forward to reverse you have to hit reverse twice before it will actually go in reverse.
