Really well designed lace shawl book.
This is beautiful book, nicely photographed with an added feature that I've never seen in another shawl book. I've seen it in books of lace patterns, but not in a shawl book. Along with multiple photographs of each shawl, so you can really see its shape and design...this book includes close ups of the lace sections alongside its chart. This is an amazingly helpful feature when knitting a stitch pattern you are unfamiliar with. Another really nice feature is the overall layout photo showing where each pattern section is placed, as well as grafting locations. Overall, this is probably the best format I've ever seen in a lace shawl book. And I've got about 50 of them! See photos attached.

AVID KNITTER SAYS: Absolutely Worth It
What’s not to like about this? For the price Amazon has this at new, you can’t find a better lace knitting book to add to your reference library. As a long long time knitter, especially shawls, and as a tester for patterns for many many years, trust me when I tell you there’s a lot of garbage out there that can add to your disappointment and frustration when learning and creating. For the price that some websites charge for 1-2 patterns you not only get 15 patterns, but advise, as well as very detailed photos to help you along the way, and an explanation of core techniques and skills necessary in knitting lace - period!I know some have complained about a few things about this particular book, but I highly doubt if you’re looking into knitting Shetland lace, that you’re a brand new knitter and have no clue in how to pick your needles, read a chart, or what yarn would work best.Excellent on the formatting, pictures, written patterns, and charts provided.HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I like so many aspects of this lace book
I like so many aspects of this lace book. I like the way she gives step by step instructions for the Apprentice patterns she has.It takes all the guess work out of her Feature Pattern construction. Many beautiful patterns my favorite is the Heirloom Shawl. But I went to copy the charts for the Heirloom Shawl and found one of the largest charts has a portion on one page and the other portion on the facing page. It is impossible to get a good copy in this position. Even trying to follow the chart from the book would be a challenge. The Rows are numbered on the Apprentice Patterns but not on her Featured Patterns.I am still glad I got this book.

Very disappointed
I wanted to love this book. The patterns are lovely - I found several that I want to put on my to-do list. That is, until I discovered that the recommended needle size for almost all of them is much, much too big. That won't keep me from knitting them, but it will mean a hassle - guessing at the amount of yarn and the finished size and frequently having to add stitches and rows to make the finished item big enough.I was very surprised when I saw the size needles Ms. Lovick recommends. No other designer of Shetland lace that I have found uses needles that big. Not only would the final product be so open that the pattern could hardly be seen (in spite of the pictures), it would be very hard to knit such fine yarn with such big needles.I will be using some of these patterns, but only with very heavy editing, which diminishes the usefulness of this book. It's a disappointment.

lovely shawls and scarves
This book has a good collection of lovely knitted scarves and shawls. The best part is that not all of them are in charted form; the main reason why I ordered this book.

So much more than just a pattern book
I love this book. It shares a love and appreciation for the knitting, and the crafters, that is reinforced by amazingly beautiful pictures. I will never be able to knit the breathtaking heirloom shawl but I can wholly appreciate its beauty and I love that it was used as a bridal veil, then as a christening shawl. Equally beautiful is the heirloom set, for a baby. I might even try the dress, but with a plain petticoat, for my next grand child. I also appreciate the modern designs and the simpler designs; these I will try. The book also has illustrated tips and advice on knitting your garment ; on yarns, needles and other equipment; dressing your finished garment and even how to wear it or use it in different ways, The pictures and details of the Shetland Islands and the Islanders, really brings the book to life. This is so much more than just a pattern book. It is a beautiful book to read, to use as a knitter, and to learn about a community, and a craft, with a beautiful history.

Needs amending, theres errors in the diagrams
Disappointed! So many lovely reviews, a friend and myself got a copy each, neither of us can make sense of row 14 in the first pattern, as we end up with too many stitches. Even just counting the pattern through the diagram it doesnt add up, 26 plus 4 simply doesnt make 32. Looks like shes knitted it first and then gone back and counted her own stitches from the finished product? If it weren't for my friend i would have blamed myself and given up trying lace altogether!

Knitting Shetland lace
This is a lovely book with excellent pictures and patterns. It's not really for the beginner, and has more complete patterns rather than the individual patterns for motifs (there is another Shetland lace book that deals with this area). My fingers are itching to get the needles out and start work - a lot of knitting in there that will be so wonderful when it's done.

Ease your way into Shetland lace knitting
I loved the way this book gave a difficulty rating for each item to be knit. It starts with ‘apprentice’ patterns which are fairly short with both written and charted instructions. These are a great introduction to the longer patterns for the larger items.

So far I have just drooled over the beautiful scarves and shawls that the book contains
I already have one of her other books on knitting shetland lace, so I expected this book to be as comprehensive as the one I already have. It was. So far I have just drooled over the beautiful scarves and shawls that the book contains. I would thoroughly recommend it and I will soon be kntitting one of them, I just have to decide which one.I would also add that the author has a section where you can produce a small sample before you go on to knit one of the shawl patterns. This is very useful as lace knitting often involves using fine wool and has lots of wool round needle and knit togethers.
