HOW TO CHECK THE BIRD AUDIO ON YOUR CLOCK
No battery covers? No 5 stars. (That was easy.)Here's how to check your clock for bird audio: Put in the three batteries. Take the clock out into direct sunlight. Slowly turn the time until you reach the top of the hour and listen to the bird call. Some of them chirp twice, a few chirp three times. Still in direct sun, proceed turning the time until you reach the top of the next hour. Listen to the bird call. Do it again until you reach the top of the next hour and listen to that bird call. The clock has a light sensor just above the "12". If the light is dim, the call is very soft. In the full sun (or other bright light) the call should be loud, attention getting, and lovely. If loud and lovely is what you get in the sun but not in the house, either reposition the clock to some place brighter or add a light near the clock.A lot of returns and some lower ratings might be prevented if this trick was tried first.I'm not saying some of the clocks aren't tinny. They could be manufactured in different countries. But the sunlight test will give you a good idea if you should return it -- or not.Happy Chirps!(I am not associated in any way with Audobon or the manufacturer. I just like this 8" clock.)

A dissapointment
I purchased this clock to replaced a similar one that was no longer keeping accurate time after 10 years of use. The original clock had bird songs common to the local area (New England) that appeared to be from recordings and were recognizable and pleasing to the ear. The new clock has bird noises that seem to be digitally generated and sound scratchy, un-lifelike, and annoying. Would not recommend this clock for someone looking for pleasing bird song.

Volume level correlates to the brightness of your lighting
Still going strong a couple years later. We love the pleasant bird calls that are scattered throughout our day! I wanted to address one of the issues that I recall being brought up. There were those who complained that the bird calls were way too loud, and those who complained that they were way too soft. Well, those are totally contradictory, so which is it? I've learned from moving it to a couple different locations in the time we've had it, plus observing it at different times of day, that the volume level is directly correlative to how bright or dim the lighting is. Bright, direct lighting = louder; muted, less direct lighting = softer. Completely dark of course = no sound at all. Quite an ingenious design, actually! You can buy this one without fear. I did have to return a similar off-brand one because the hands quit turning only a week or so after purchase. No such problem with this one. Yes, it is plastic, but with five kids around, it's even withstood a couple falls (at one point it was just leaning in place rather than mounted up on the wall until we could get to it) and even then, it's kept chugging along without any trouble.

Attractive Wall Clock With Bird Sounds
We purchased this clock to hang in the rear patio of our new home. It is attractive, and the bird sounds at the top of each hour are synchronized to the birds illustrated on the face of the clock. The bird sounds themselves are quite discreet and low in volume, so if there is much background noise or you aren't listening closely, you might not notice them. But they are a nice feature that does give an audible indication each hour, without being as obvious or obtrusive as many clocks that chime. We haven't had it long enough for me to know if the timekeeping is accurate, but these small battery powered clocks all use what I would consider to be generic clock mechanisms, and I expect it will keep accurate time.Battery life is similarly to be determined. As we've used this for a longer period of time, if there are further comments to add to this review, I'll do so.Note that this same clock is available on Amazon from various sellers, and in two different sizes (13" diameter, and a smaller 8" diameter).

Is that Goldfinch O'clock? I think I'm late picking the kids up from school...
My grandmother gave me a version of this bird clock waaaay back in the last century and two months ago it finally died. Being the sentimental soul that I am I knew my family needed another one. (I know what I'm going to get the kids when they finally leave home. It's a tradition, lol.)This clock is nice looking although plastic. The green that runs around the sides is an attractive matte color. I like that the birds aren't all predictable choices. There's a Red-winged Blackbird (or is it a tri-color?) as well as a Hermit Thrush.I have the clock in the kitchen, by the way. I like that the face is large enough to see from a distance. I also like that I can hear the clock in other rooms. That helps me so that time doesn't slip away.

The same clocks my grandmother always used
My grandmother always had a bunch of these throughout her house, and hearing the bird noises every hour was one of the distinctive experiences of staying at her house. She was a member of the Audubon Society and kept track of bird populations in the CT area as a volunteer, so these clocks probably had some special meaning for her. Now they are in my parents' house, and when my in-laws visited here from China, they really liked these clocks and they asked me if I could find where to buy them so they could bring them back to China as gifts. This is basically the same clock that my grandmother always used. It has a different bird picture for each hour, and it plays the sound of that species of bird on that hour, so that you hear a different bird sound once every hour throughout the day.

I love the smaller size
I had purchased the larger version of this and returned it because the back of the clock's plastic was so cheesy and thin, the clock hands on the front would get stuck. I love the smaller size. More sturdy, keeps great time, hands on the front work as they should and I love the bird calls on this one. If the light source is low in the room, the bird sounds get quieter. The bird sounds are wonderful and charming. Keeps me aware of the passing hours without being annoying. Happy with this clock.
