How do these compare with Prismacolor pencils?

The pencils are much less expensive and maybe just a tad bit better in some ways.  Castle pencils keep the points better thus they are not as soft or buttery but still lay down beautifully.  With the 120 set of Castle, I had one pencil come with a broken tip (002) and one core broke when I sharpened it. Castle pencils blend beautifully with the blender pen and the Prismacolor blender pencil.  The other nice thing about Castle is their guarantee if you are not happy with your pencil set.  Let them know and they will refund and let you keep the pencils.  This guarantee was instrumental in my purchasing Castle.  I, also, own the 150 set of Prismacolor colored pencils and love them except they break often when I sharpen them so I often use the sand paper board to get a nice point and to save the length of my pencil.   When I get a nice sharp point on the Prisma, the very tip will crumble but this doesn't happen with the Castle so far.  The Castle core seems to be a bit harder.  There are advantage to both but the Castle price is much better.

are these pencils the same as the 120 set that comes in the tin?

Yes the exact same! I bought  a case because the trays in the tin are a tad flimsy

I have the 120 watercolor pencil set. Is there any reason I would need this set also?
