Tremendous Upgrade
First of all, I've seen the play twice and have watched the DVD many times -- definitely love it! I decided to re-buy this as bluray for the improved video, but mostly for the better audio quality. I haven't been disappointed at all. In fact, if it weren't that my house and home theater are rather upset due to some current renovations, I would be watching/listening yet again right now. I am not a great fan of musical or opera, but this stunning presentation by Andrew Lloyd Weber completely won me over. Now I can hope for another re-buy to get a 4K/UHD version with Atmos (the Atmos being the critical concern).

Beautiful story with great actors....
I have seen the version with Charles Dance, and I thought that one was amazing, until I saw this one and I was truly blown away by everything about it. If you watch the trailer then you will definitely want to watch this one for sure.I wasn't sure, at first, that I wanted to watch it but then said what the heck. From start to finish it was awesome. The actors were great, the story was set to the original of how it was told, although I haven't actually read the book, which I am told is great. The music will be listened to for generations of music lovers for a very long time. IF you love musicals then you will love this, if you know of the original story then you know it ends in sadness, so be warned, especially if you cry at movies like I do.This will make you sigh with happiness and cry at the sadness. It's an amazing and truly awesome movie, even if they re-made this one again it would never stand up to Gerard Butler's Phantom, Emmy Rossum's Christine or Patrick Wilson's Raoul. 5 Plus stars (I'd give 10 if I could :-) )

My Favorite Movie
I have been a fan of Phantom of the Opera since I read the book back in middle school. When the movie came out in theaters I had to go and see it in person. It took my breath away! The orchestra, the singing, and the setting is put together beautifully. I've watched this movie hundreds of times and still love every minute of it. I finally decided to upgrade from my DVD to Blu-Ray and I am SO glad I did! I think the sound is better and the picture is obviously improved. On newer tv's of today I think it's worth making the switch.

Just...wow! (with one flaw)
Gerard Butler is such a great Phantom!!! AMAZING screen adaptation and the entire intro and the boat scene (and walking down the underground hall) is like watching the most amazing gothic romance metal music video you've ever seen. To compare this with the London musical with Karimloo as Phantom, I prefer how they didn't make Butler's Phantom's entire face scarred and even with the scarring you could see that he is otherwise very handsome. The musical (Karimloo, Boggess) is absolutely fantastic and Sierra Boggess is outstanding (far surpassing Emily Rossum. The flaw of this film adaptation is that Butler deserves a better counterpart). Phantom is fashioned better in this compared to the musical. In the musical version, I didn't like how Karimloo's disfigurement was his entire lips and once he took the mask off he was downright creepy, like Frankenstein. The Phantom can be partially facially disfigured but still otherwise handsome and human and sexy and you can see what the rest of his face looks like and would otherwise look like without the scarring. Good example: Gerard Butler as Phantom. I also love the very masculine and dark quality of Butler's voice even if he doesn't go as big as Lewis or Karimloo. Butler sounds very masculine, and looks very masculine. I would love to see another movie version of Phantom with Butler and a different actress. Rossum was okay but not great, neither her acting nor her vocal ability was even half that of the musical w Boggess. As for Anna O'Byrne as Christine in the sequel ( Love Never Dies), her face is as lovely as her voice and her acting is good. Of the three, Boggess is the best Christine, followed by O'Byrne, then Rossum falls way behind. Of the three Phantom's, Butler and Lewis followed by Karimloo.

Wonderful movie version
This is a wonderful movie version of The Phantom of The Opera. Gerard Butler is a fantastic singer!!! Who would have thought, not me, but he is. He is the Phantom and plays the part so well. I think he should have played the Phantom on Broadway, also. Emma Rossum plays Christine and she was only a young teenager when this movie was made. Her voice is angelic. I love, love, love this movie and can watch it over and over again and never be tired of watching it. The quality of this video is excellent. I give this movie version a 10m out of 10 so yes, I do recommend this video.

Great quality disc and extras.
This two-disc set arrived promptly and played great. Nice extra features, with much from the various stage productions. As for the movie itself, I found it highly watchable. Gerard Butler is a tad more swashbuckling---and his makeup less repulsive--- than his stage counterparts, so we have to buy more into Christine's rejection of him. Butler's singing voice has less range, too---but I found its rough edge to be more effective than other perfectly-pitched Phantoms. Check this out for yourself, the music alone is worth your time.

Dark story - well done - could have better vocals.
Gerard Butler imo isn't that strong vocally - acting is good but this movie demands superb vocals imo. Rossum is awesome vocally and acting is pretty good - she gets a little dazed and dreamy eyed too often, but that happens when you are under a spell of sorts, maybe cut some slack here.. The only bummer about this story (not the move per se) is how negative the Phantom character is in general. He has virtually no redeeming values except his music which comes at a price... Love Never Dies, the sequel to this movie is out - and it has superb vocals. the Phantom returns as Mr. T ... still dark and negative but the movie opens up ... its not a movie in the classic sense - its a movie of an actual stage production .. and is excellent. The phantom is still dark, but the story gets more complicated and Mr.T gets a few tiny junks of virtue and redemption. IF you like musical type stories 4-1/2 stars, if you don't .. you might totally hate it.

You will be hearing the "music of the night" in your head for weeks
)'The Phantom of the Opera' tells the story of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House, waging a reign of terror over its occupants. When he falls fatally in love with the lovely young soprano Christine, the Phantom devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera. The stage musical sensation is magically and hauntingly transformed by director Joel Schumacher into a lavish film production, sweeping audiences to new heights of sight and sound grandeur. Gerard Butler (as the Phantom), Emmy Rossum (as Christine) and Patrick Wilson (as Raoul) play out the fateful love triangle that unfurls in splendor, suspense.WHAT CAN I SAY?Her voice became his passion. Her love became his obsession. Her refusal became his rage.....This is a stunning adaptation of the massive musical Phantom Of The Opera. The sets are lavish and so detailed, they really are mesmerizing. The acting is brilliant and Gerard Butler and Emmie Rossum give award winning performances as the two leads. Their vocals are outstanding, especially Rossum's as she was only 16 when she filmed this, she is immensely talented for someone of her age.also Gerard Butler as the role of the Phantom was also really good. The anger and loneliness surrounding him was heartbreaking as well as his emotions towards Christine. Gerard portrays all of the Phantom's qualities: anger, sadness, loneliness, genius, madness This film gave so much texture and substance to the opera Director Joel Schumacher has brought this to the big screen magnificently Right from the opening minutes the film became extremely engaging and really never slows down. One thing for sure the set design and visual glamor of the film is astounding. The supporting actors are also great,,if you have not yet seen this be prepared ??to be impressed !!!.this will send a shiver down your spine,it's a truly emotional ride, with great and familiar songs, alongwith the most impressive orchestral backing throughout. The Phantom of the Opera as a whole is ((((just brilliant!.)))

The beauty of the music of the night
It might be a travesty but I have never seen Lloyd Webber's stage version of The Phantom Of The Opera! However, I have had the stage soundtrack featuring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman and I have listened to that countless times, and loved it. My wife had never seen the stage version or heard the soundtrack until recently I played the opening scene of the auction to her. She admitted she would be intrigued to see the stage version and so I quickly searched Amazon as I knew of this film version and I had seen the Teri Polo TV version many years ago. I ordered both versions through Amazon and they arrived swiftly.Tonight we settled to watch the screen version of Lloyd Webber's musical and it was just so good we were spellbound. The principals were so magnificent and the effects so brilliant. Listening to the CDs over the years I had conjured in my mind's eye the scenes of the musical and the film version brought some to life true to my mental images, others were so much more opulent and cleverly realised (the first being the transformation from the dusty, cobwebbed and decaying opera house to the bustling, brightly lit and alive past). A delight was seeing Jennifer Ellison showing a very charming and capable acting style (a very impressive performance) such that I wasn't even convinced it was really her until the credits rolled - I know, she did Chicago, but still a delight. The whole cast of dancers were also amazing (especially the solo guy in the "Masquerade" routine). The story is a such a fantastic blend of love and hate, comedy and tragedy (the comic moments reminding me of the Musketeer movies featuring Michael York, Oliver Reed and Richard Chamberlain from the 70's) and every member of the principal cast played every nuance of their part with such passion it held us from the early moments through to the awesome climax and then onwards to the credits. Now we are both hoping to see the stage musical at her 40th birthday as we are both so inspired by the film version.Phantom-tastic!

Gerard Butler is the greatest Phantom!
I have seen this movie many times, I've always loved it. It has amazing songs, amazing singers and overall the movie is just outstanding!. This was actually the first "Phantom of the opera" movie I had originally watched and to make a better assessment of the movie I decided to sit down and watch a few of the previous movies. I watched the 1990's version starring Charles Dance as the phantom as I enjoy many of his movies, his version of the phantom was very well done, he was such a gentlemen that it was very hard to believe he actually murdered anyone. Which for me made it a little unbelievable in my opinion.. The fact it was three hours long didn't help as very little happened between the beginning and the end and overall just wasn't exciting as the 2004 verision. Emmy Rossum played the part of Christine Daae very well, I preferred the tone of her voice to the previous Christine's. But when paired with Gerard Butler she sounded even better, their voices complimented each other perfectly and it shows well in many of the featured songs but especially "the point of no return". Gerard butler played a very dark and mysterious phantom, has a very rich deep voice which was my preference to many of the other phantoms. Overall his acting was brilliant, you could really feel the connection between the two main characters which made it more enjoyable to watch. Overall great movie, one of my all time favourite musicals, very dark but also very entertaining. I would recommend this to anyone especially any musical fans out there, 10/10!

Dramatic
Very dramatic musical, and superb music. Emotional story and songs. My only difficulty was with the volume changing so vastly from scene to scene that I could not keep up with the volume control, which rather spoiled the production, but one to keep even so.
