New Artistic Anatomy: Female Morphology

Excellent reference resource
This is a solid in depth look at the differences between male and female anatomy painstakingly derived from measurement and observation. Delving into details like hair growth patterns across the body and toe angles, I see it is a great addition to my own vast collection of anatomical reference. It is filled with illustrations that quickly describe visually each subject being discussed, and serve as a good guide to understanding why you see what you see. Much like his other staple book "Artistic Anatomy", I'm glad I have it, and I will refer to it often.

Absolutely recommend this to any artist or art student interested in the human figure. Highly informative book by one of the fathers of modern anatomy, you won't find this information any where else. Filled with detailed descriptions, illustrations and many beautiful sketches from life by Richer to illustrate each topic. In a world full of male skeletons and muscles, a book on female comparative anatomy is highly useful and will earn it's place as a favorite reference book.Very glad it has been translated into english!

Misleading and disappointing--read the fine print.
While it never claimed to be this, "New Artistic Anatomy" led me to eagerly anticipate new findings (from MRI, CAT scan, etc.?) for insights / discoveries in how we may more accurately "see"/understand the female form. I have Goldfinger's most excellent anatomy book and when I saw his endorsement was excited to discover anything "new" that he would recommend. Instead, I found it was a translation of a very old text that was "new" at the time it was first printed--author was born in the mid 1800s and died in 1933. Drawings are in fact disappointingly old, promoting stereotypes of that age. If you are sleuthing how male artists perceived the female body in the former century, this is the book for you. If you are eager for new findings that will sharpen your own perceptions of the female body, you will want to keep looking,

Notwithstanding this is a beautiful book with a wonderful translation from the original French
This classic, now in English for the first time thanks to Allana M. Benham, is a long overdue addition to the corpus of knowledge available to the figurative artist with its emphasis of female morphology. I only wish that there was a hardcover in a larger dimension format. Notwithstanding this is a beautiful book with a wonderful translation from the original French. Heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Allana for her work.

Must Have Book For Artists
FINALLY! It's unbelievable a translation of Richer's work for female anatomy hasn't been done in the past, but it's amazing that it is now available. This is a MUST HAVE book for artists.

Detailed measurements are good to have however
Nothing "New" about the New Artistic Anatomy – drawings are from the 50s and the cover is the only image of actual sculpture. Detailed measurements are good to have however.

Artistic Anatomy Artist's Need This Book: Thank you Allana M. Benham.
In translating Dr. Paul Richer's "Morphologie, La Femme" Allana M. Benham has made the most significant contribution to the study of artistic anatomy since Goldfinger's "Human Anatomy For Artists" from 1991.Benham has thankfully resisted the temptation to turn the material into a coffee table vanity project and has stuck to the origional manual type format. The reproductions of the diagrams and drawings are excellent and the clarity of the text perfect. In a publishing world contiually printing the same information as Richer's "Artistic Anatomy" over and over again but by any author who can pick up a crayon, it's no wonder that translating an origional text can be so successfull simillar to "Complete Guide To Life Drawing" by Gottfried Bammes from the German in 2011 by Search Press. The only other actually new information in the last 20yrs is the 2003 "Unmasking The Face" by Paul Ekman. No figurative artist should be without this essential work as frankly it's the only serious book dedicated solely to the female form.Buy this book as soon as possible because it's an instant classic.
