The Perils of Pauline (The Film Detective Restored Version)

One of the best bio films of the time.
Even with the artistic license taken, sometimes for miles, it effectively portrayed Pearl Whites' life experiences and tragedies. It may also be one of Betty Hutton's best performances. Cheers! Well done.

DELIGHTFUL BUT SAD
I cannot help but give this film 5 stars. I read another review and the person gave it 1 star. They did so because they knew from watching it years ago in its original form that some scenes were removed. That is why there are a few strange cuts from one scene to another as if the film broke and they taped it back together. The person that gave the 1 star review mentioned that one or another scene included Hutton in "blackface." Of course, that is not acceptable at this time, however, when originally made that kind of scene was acceptable. I wish we could watch films in their original form. It's unfair that what is likely a very talented scene is now considered obscene, so removed. If it's feared it may offend individuals then perhaps a disclaimer can be added to the opening explaining that at the time the film was made certain things were considered acceptable. Call it a history lesson of sorts. We have a past, good and bad, however, cutting out what we no longer like does not change history.I hope, one day, I will be able to see this fun film in its entirety.

forget yur troubles and laugh
once upon a time when there was a Hollywood.....silly, enjoyable films like this were made by people who wanted to make a lot of money. this film is an example. the films did not have to have a deep desire to save man/womankind, but just make us laugh a bit through hard times. films simply to let people forget their problems. this one stars an actress, miss betty hutton, who had a lot of problems of her own, but you'd never know it with this film. betty made us laugh. betty made us forget for awhile. betty was my friend. long live her memory and her movies.

Hilarious!
This musical comedy emphasizes the comedy. Yes, there is melodrama, but the movie is at least 70% comedy, I think. An example"The President is calling a special session of Congress to declare war on Germany.""War? That's horrible.""You said it. Now we gotta rewrite the last six episodes."Not very historically accurate, but who cares? If you want that, watch a documentary. A total Betty Hutton vehicle The love story is sweet and there are a number of cameos from old silent film stars. The songs are... I don't know... jazzy?Haven't seen the DVD yet, but the VHS print I have doesn't look too good. Still, it's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I think it's worth a watch.

Film Detective vs. Roan Group
Though called The Film Detective RESTORED Version, that name must be a misnomer. The audio is fine, but the picture is blurry and faded. If this is restored, I certainly wouldn't want to see the unrestored version. The opening Paramount logo has been deleted as well.Meanwhile, I just compared this side by side with the Roan Group Archival Entertainment transfer, and the Roan Group transfer is much better. The images (including the opening titles) are sharper and even though this version hasn't received extensive restoration, the colors are more vivid and the overall picture is much, much better. The sound is still fine, as Betty Hutton belts out tune after tune in her usual frantic style. The only complaint I have of this version is that it has too much red, making faces appear flushed, and any red objects are almost flaring.Keep your fingers crossed, folks, for a decent, restored version. This great Paramount flick deserves it!

The Perils of Pauline a great Betty Hutton movies
One of Betty Hutton's most active role playing Pearl White. The great heroine of the silent movies. She sings & act on screen as one the great adventure serial actresses. Back then they were their own stunt people. And Pearl White was one of the best ones. If you like old 40's musicals, you will like "The Perils of Pauline" w/ Betty Hutton and John Lund.

Perils Of Pauline
I was so excited when I found this online, and couldn't wait to get it in the mail. But I was very disappointed. There a are parts of the movie that are missing and it isn't the best copy. The color isn't the greatest. At one point I thought it was done in black and white, but there are some shots and even some fabrics in the picture that are in color. Some of the movie is glaringly white. I love this movie, but wish it was complete and better color.

An Enjoyable Classic
We found this for the first time in a discount bin as a VHS. It seemed a bit hokey at first, but with time it grew on us and we finally decided to track it down again on DVD. We are glad that we did, and the story was still interesting and entertaining.
