Fits a 39.5" Mossberg 930spx w/ pistol grip- barely.
My mossberg 930 spx with a pistol grip is 39.5" long. This case is 42"L, and it's a snug fit. The case is well made, seems very durable, and the large heavy duty zippers seem to hold together well with the snug fit of the shotgun. The only thing I'm concerned about is that the front site just barely clears the zipper. I put a small cloth over the sight when I zip it up for extra protection. There doesn't seem to be an official way to lock the zippers, but the base of the zipper tabs have holes big enough to fit a small luggage lock through. I may opt to drill holes through the tabs themselves and use that as the lock loops.Padding is soft, not thick, but enough to keep your firearm safe from getting dinged or scratched. The side pouch has one main compartment and a small side pocket- both zippered, non-lockable.Overall, I like it. It has a good durable feel to it, fits my weapon snugly, and is my new range carrier. I was using a huge, bulky 44" box shaped nylon case (smallest they had over 39") and my shotgun swam in it. This VISM Gun Case is exactly what I needed and the cheap price was perfect.

Great Value for the Money
I am a casual shooter, and was looking for an inexpensive, decent quality, no-frills case with a shoulder strap for carrying my 12ga tactical shotgun to the range, and this bag fits my needs nearly perfectly. The hard case that came with the gun is much nicer, but when you're carrying a couple of long guns, a range bag, a fistful of targets, and maybe a portable rest into the range, hard cases are a pain. Being able to sling your guns over your shoulder makes life easier.OK, so the case itself... Like I said, I wasn't looking for anything fancy, and this case is not. The quality of the materials and workmanship appear to be good for the money. The shoulder strap is pretty chintzy, but perfectly serviceable for walking to and from the car. The only ding I would give the bag here is that the clips on the ends of the shoulder strap look extremely cheap, and seem destined for failure, mainly because of the very small overlap between the two sides of the clip's opening. I think I can probably address that with a pair of pliers though, so not too big of a deal. Would I recommend the bag overall? If your needs are the same as mine, then absolutely yes. If, on the other hand, you need a bag that can stand up to regular (daily/weekly) use and abuse, then you may want to upgrade to something nicer. That said, at this price point, for what you get I have to give this bag five stars.Sizing... Others have noted that the dimensions listed in the description are the case's external dimensions, which is normal for gun cases. The usual rule of thumb is to take an inch off of the external dimensions to estimate the usable interior space. I bought the 42" case, and measuring the interior with a tape measure, it comes out right at 41", so that's as expected. The gun I bought this case for is almost exactly 38" in its longest dimension, so after adding a couple of inches to allow for the bulk of the gun, I got the 42" case, and the gun fits nicely, with a little bit of room to spare at each end. For what it's worth, I have an attachment near the end of the barrel/mag tube on my gun that mounts a sling swivel on one side and weapon mounted light on the other. When I zip the bag closed it's a little tight around that point, but I can still zip it without having to take the light off, and it's not so tight that I'm worried about the zipper failing.

Ships from MFR folded in half. Really dumb.
Item is packaged folded in half. This creates a crease in the foam and ruins the integrity of the foam since it stays permamentely creased. It just flops about at the crease point. It looks like it is shipped this way via the manufacturer, not sure who thought this was a good idea. The bag length is also very short, stated it will fit a 40" gun if you get the 42" bag. Barely fits my 39.5" shotgun. I doubt the exterior of the bag even measures out to 42", maybe 41". You get what you pay for. Maybe it will stretch out but I doubt it. More annoyed about the crease in the bag.I will be returning.

Does all you need for not a lot
This case is a basic, no frills gun case if all you want is to protect, store and transport your long firearm. In that respect it works great. It isn't the most beautiful case out and it doesn't have a million accessories or add ons but it looks good, is well padded and does the job admirably. For what I need it works perfect and I see no reason to spend more money for extra features that aren't necessary. I use this on a Mossberg Maverick 88 and bought the 42 x 9 size and it fits great. The zippers seem like they are high quality and should last, the stitching looks good and I believe will be durable, the fit is great and it has a nice 2 compartment outside pocket for carrying some ammo or extra mags or other small items. Super functional case for quite cheap. Can't beat it for the price.

Owners of Ruger 10/22 variants take note
Several reviewers have noted that the 40" cases will hold a Ruger 10/22 which is undoubtedly true. The 10/22 Target and the 10/22 L/VT, however, have 20" barrels, 2" longer than standard models. Noting that, I ordered the 42" version of this case. My L/VT does fit but just barely. It definitely would not fit in the 40" version of this VISM NcStar. All my other impressions just echo what's already been written many time here. There's one exception, though; I'm a little disappointed in the size of the zipper bag on the side. It's big enough for a 25-rd mag & shooting glasses, but there's room on the case for two pockets or one big enough to hold a couple of mags, glasses and hearing protection. Looks like I'll always have to tote a range case, as well, but this was a matter of personal preference, & I can't deduct stars for that.

Really great case---and has a strap too!
This is a great case! Padding in the 42" model is excellent and just fits my 38" length Ruger 77/357 with about 1/2" to spare. What attracted me most to this item are the strap and pockets as well as the overlapping zipper handles that are designed to accommodate a lock. The strap frees-up your hand to carry bags or a duffel. Worked so well, I ordered the 38" also for my 30 carbine.
