US Landing Craft of World War II, Vol. 2: The LCT, LSM, LCS(L)(3), and LST (Legends of Warfare: Naval)

"Legends of Warfare" seems to be Schiffer Publishing's spin on the old Squadron/Signal format, and since Squadron is now dead, it's likely its popularity will take off in the future. The format and layout of this book is similar to that of its companion volume; each craft receives a brief one-page introduction, a specifications sheet, and a production breakdown for each type except for the LCS, followed by a series of photographs, typically one or two to a page, with informative captions.There are about 200 photographs in total, with a wide variety of in-action, shipyard, and onboard images, with some interesting shots of modified and specialized postwar versions of each craft. While the majority are in black and white, there are a few color images scattered about, along with a number of color photographs of LST-325 preserved in Evansville, Indiana. In total, the LCM receives 30 pages, the LSM 14 pages, the LCS(L)(3) eight pages, and the LST 70 pages.My criticisms are the same as those I had for volume one. A three-view drawing of each type would have helped orient the readers better, and there are a few photographs that are too murky to make out details mentioned in the caption. Still, for $17, this is a very nice little reference book, the production values and editing are excellent, and I'd definitely recommend both volumes to anyone interested in amphibious warfare craft.

Great book for WW2 model builders. Covers the evolution, and variants of the listed types of landing craft, and has some great photos, too.

上陸用舟艇の中でも小型船型を特集した「US Landing Craft of World War II Vol.1」に続き今号は比較的大型の上陸用舟艇に関するものになっています。表題どおり、前号同様米軍で計画、使用された艦艇のみ取り上げており、英海軍他での計画艦艇は掲載されておりません。扱っているのは商品画像の”Contens”にあるように・Landing Craft Tank(LCT)　：米軍で使用されたLCT(5)型とLCT(6)型のみ。・Landing Ship,Medium(LSM)　：上陸支援型のLSM(R)については188級は画像なし。LSM(R)401のみ写真6枚掲載。・Landing Craft,Support(Large)LCS(L)(3)　：前号掲載のLCI(L)の派生型ですが今号で紹介。・Landing ship,Tank(LST)　：各種派生型に関してはAPB（宿泊艦）ARST、ARB、ARL（以上各種工作艦）　　AGP（魚雷艇母艦）LST(H)（特設病院船）を取り上げ、Ｐ119～128に　　現在記念艦となっているLST325の内部カラー画像などを掲載。以上、個々のクローズアップ画像+戦場での画像という感じの編集です。カラー画像は30枚程度、他モノクロ画像もかなり鮮明なものが多く掲載されています。図面は無く記述要素も多くありませんが、その分写真キャプションが充実しているのである程度の概要はつかめると思います。期待通りの内容で大変満足しているのですが、強いて言えば上陸用舟艇などで多用されていたMs31/5Lなどのグリーン系迷彩のカラー画像が無かったのがチョット残念でした。各艦種とも建造時の光景や内装の一部など珍しい画像があり興味のある方には満足できる内容だと思います。このシリーズは編集、画質、紙質などが大変バランスよく、各舟艇自体を目的とされる方には現時点ではコストパフォーマンスが高い大変良い資料だと思います。
