A large shrub or small tree native to Central and western South America between 300 and 3900 m elevation with large, ribbed leaves and clusters of small, pink flowers that are followed by winged fruits. Cinchona pubescens makes an attractive ornamental but can be highly invasive especially in island habitats. Its bark contains quinine, a substance used to treat malaria.
