It seems to be the pole length is 10 ft, plus your reach

Yes, It's common for us Dewalt owner's to buy the "bare tool" because we already have several batteries from other Dewalt tool purchases. I have about 12 tools but only about 8 batteries. It keeps the price down since the batteries are about 1/3 of the cost of a typical tool. Also it gives you the option of buying a not Dewalt battery at a lower price if that's what you choose to do.

Q: Does this particular model dcps620b cone with a sheath cover? i.e. a chain/bar cover?

It does not. The part number for the sheath cover is N656402.

Q: how much power does this unit have? Can it cut thru thick branches?

Make first cut 6" (152 mm) from tree trunk on underside of limb. Use top of guide bar to make this cut. Cut 1/3 through diameter of limb. Then make the finish cut from the top. If you try to cut off thick branches from the bottom, the branch may close in and pinch the saw chain in the cut. If you try to cut off thick branches from the top, without a shallow undercut, the branch may splinter. Do not force pole saw. The motor will overload and can burn out.
