How good is the smaller light as a spotlight - how far does it project? How good is the LED as a spotlight (how far does it project)?

The smaller light is sufficient to see within 30 feet but is not overly bright. The LED is much brighter and useful as a spot and will project well up to about 100 feet.

Is the battery of the PowerTank safe for airplane checked baggage?

I see no serious complications. I have never checked a psu in my baggage, but I have checked computer components along with other dry cell batteries.

Can the pack be charged in Europe (220 V)?

Is there an alternative we can buy since these don't seem to hold up?

Not sure what you man by "these don't hold up" because they last years if you take care of them and charge them up once in awhile while not in use. Look for the Power Tank Lithium as an option.
