Beautiful, Interesting, Inspirational and Hopeful
As a mental health professional who has worked with children for over 20 years, I have had the pleasure of reading many children's books and have become passionate about a handful, knowing what a multilayered impact they can have on children and the adults who read with them. This book is spectacular! It is timely, beautifully written and contains a powerful message to young girls and to all of us. There are nuggets of inspiration and interesting fact throughout the book from the quotes embedded in the pictures to the beautifully varied verse that brings the stories of each person to life to the different styles of each illustrator. It is understandable for children but far from simple and profoundly affected me as I read. I highly recommend this book for all ages up through middle and even high school. If I had to choose one word to describe 'Shaking Things Up', I would say 'Inspirational'!

Shaking Things Up:14 Young Women Who Changed the World by Susan Hood is an inspiring book for all ages. It is a great read aloud for a toddler or child with its variety of fun poems describing each young woman along with beautiful illustrations. An older child will like reading the book independently enjoying the verse, illustrations and will be inspired by these young women who opened doors and made an impact in the world. Shaking Things Up is a book I highly recommend to share with the children and adolescents in your life, and you too will find it motivating!

Delightful introduction to strong women through poetry
Our almost-seven-year-old will pick this one up off of the shelf on her own to read, so you know it's a winner! Shaking Things Up has poetry, artwork by multiple award-winning illustrators, and information about women who changed the world all in one. Hood included many women I knew already (Frida Jahlo, Ruby Bridges, and Malala Yousafzai, among others), but also introduced me to many women I wasn't already familiar with (such as Molly Williams, the first known female firefighter in the United States!).

Inspiring book
What an inspiring book for children this is! It tells the stories of 14 young women (includes many new names) who accomplished great things for the world in either curious, caring, daring or defiant ways- done in a fun variety of poetic formats, no less! Very readable, with just the right amount of extra information. Illustrated by 13 fantastic illustrators (all female!). Inspires readers to ask, "In what way can I make the world a better place?"

Great for March is Women’s History Month
This book has 14 different influential women and paired great with my poetry unit! I taught that in March and it was great to incorporate it into Women’s History Month! Each poem led to engaging conversations with my 4th grade students.
