Good educational activities; not a stand-alone kit!
I got this for a 7yo to try over winter vacation. I opened it when it came but haven't used it yet.So first of all, this is just a bunch of cards in a tin case, not an all-inclusive kit. Each of the cards has one "trick" (they're more like mini experiments) and includes a few steps for instructions, as well as an explanation. The instructions are sometimes unclear as they are very short (they only have a card to include everything), so even older kids might find adult help useful, but there are pictures on the cards that sometimes help clarify. The "tricks" look to be fun, engaging (at least with a 7yo in mind), and educational. They mostly involve basic household items like paper, pencils, water*, etc., but there are a few items that you may not have around such as juice concentrates, disposable cups and plastic wrap (we try to be eco-friendly, so we don't have these things), and wine glasses (we have the stemless kind that are less likely to get knocked over or broken, but don't make the cool sound that stemmed ones do). If you can't borrow or substitute items that you don't have, you can just skip that card.A lot of these are pretty short (knocking on different parts of the table) or involve more time prepping than doing (which is fine; it still keeps the kids engaged). I plan to have the child do these as science experiments and keep a science journal with questions, hypotheses, drawings, etc. so that she gets more out of them. It will also be cool to see her notes and views on them change as she repeats them over the years. I can also see these as being fun group activities that include multiple kids and/or adults. Instead of keeping a journal, the group could discuss the activity as they do it, making it more interactive. Some would work well in classrooms, others would not (mostly depends on what materials are necessary). Also, there is variety in the amount of time each of these would take, with shorter ones being good for a spare few minutes here and there and longer ones requiring more dedication. As for quality, these cards are coated in plastic and come in a metal storage case, so they should last quite a while. Type is a bit small and language too advanced for early readers, but adults shouldn't have a problem (other than the aforementioned occasional confusing directions). All in all, not perfect but I would recommend! And good deal for the price. Personally, I plan on buying more of these types of kits.Pros: 20 mini experimentsgood for almost any age (though most kids need adult help/supervision)can be repeated for deeper understandingeducationalgood quality materials - should last a long timemostly requires readily available materialsCons: sometimes a bit confusingsome required materials may not be so readily available*We are so lucky that we have water to spare for entertainment purposes! If we had to walk for miles with our family's daily supply of water on our heads, we wouldn't want to waste a drop of it on this extravagance!
