Product Description Mary and Larry are two lovers, who , with Larry's ace mechanic, kidnap the daughter of a grocery store owner, and make off with the ransom. They are chased over hill, over vale by the cops, who deploy everything from 426 Hemis to helicopters to stop Larry's Dodge Charger .com Susan George (Straw Dogs) is ex-groupie Mary and Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) is wannabe-NASCAR driver Larry. They're thieves on the run from sheriff Vic Morrow (The Blackboard Jungle), who carries neither gun nor badge. According to director John Hough (The Legend of Hell House), his white trash cult classic was "an action picture with a lot of stunts." That about sums it up. The Tarantino favorite is slim on character development, but overstuffed with automobile-oriented action (most revolving around a 1969 Dodge Charger). Notable stunts include a game of chicken with a couple of 18-wheelers, a low-flying helicopter chase, and a death-defying leap over a moving bridge (Speed would up the ante with a bus). Adapted from the novel The Chase, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry also has one shocker of an ending. Adam Roarke, as levelheaded mechanic Deke, and an uncredited Roddy McDowall, as supermarket manager George, provide solid support. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Like a bolt of lightning.
This is so much more than a car chase movie. What's at least as interesting as the chase scenes, and they are interesting, filled with a desperation that is palpable - what's at least as interesting as these is the constant dialogue and relationship dynamics that are going down as the getaway unfolds. I love Susan George. There is so much earnest pathos in her expression. Yes, she plays kind of a cheap slut, yet underneath it there is such a vulnerable and childlike woman, girl I should say, she's only 22 in the movie. If you pay attention to what's going on in the relationships angle, the movie has almost a tragic quality. That dynamic shifts from the time she's riding in the front of the car with Larry to the time she's riding in back with Deke. Deke, sensitive to Mary, loyal to Larry. The whole subplot of these guys being like Nascar circuit racer (Larry) and Deke (his mechanic) gone bad is intriguing. Throw Mary in the bunch and you've got dynamite. I've seen this movie 3 times, the first time when I was 11, the second somewhere in the 30s and then just tonite again with some friends. when you pay attention to this movie and notice the acting that is going on behind the main plot, you really begin to appreciate what unique characters these are and how perfectly they imbibe something of 1974 which is when the movie was made. The book "The Chase" was written in 1961 and I don't know if it even includes the character of Mary. But that's what really makes this movie all its own. Don't miss Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. I think the characters are every bit as memorable if not more than those of Bonnie and Clyde (another excellent movie). But where Bonnie and Clyde portrays a depression era, and depression era theives, "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" encapsulates something winding down from the end of the late 60s - youth culture on a mad getaway ride..

Formatted for your TV twice
First, this is a great film. If you have 5.1-surround sound, take full advantage of it and enjoy the movie. Yet, I am glad that I still have the original VHS copy and for one reason. In the past Network TV formatted the original image of "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" to fit a 4x3 TV and then they took that image and black out even more of the picture to fit the modern 16x9 TV's and call it a Widescreen Presentation 1.85:1. Now, who is getting rip off?Let me put that in a different way. "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" was release in 1974 by 20th Century Fox to the theater in its original 1.85:1 format. Later in years, Network TV bought the rights to show this movie on your 4x3 TV's. To do this they had to cut off the left and right sides of the movie and reduce it to a 1.33:1 format. Then, someone took this TV 4x3 version and release it on DVD. To format this to fit the modern 16x9 picture they had to black out the top and bottom of the 1.33:1 image and claim that it is the 1.85:1 version of the film. This is not the original edit of the film that was shown in the theaters. When I compare Warner Brothers "Defending Your Life" 1.85 version to my old VHS 1.33 copy it had the whole image that you saw in the theater. All of my true 1.85 copies of the movies (Antz, Cocoon, Ordinary People and Defending Your Life) show what you seen in the theaters. This has been going on since 1996 and no one seems to care. I understand if they are unable to find an original 1.85 version of the older films but I have movies that were release on the theaters in 2002 that has the same thing done to it.

My top end in unlimited
Its about time that this film was released on DVD. I first watched this movie in 1979 while babysitting a bunch of kids. This movie depticts a bygone era of cool cars, fast driving and almost cool cops. This movie is not about synthetic Hollywood dialog or about slick special effect. Its not about a bunch of punk kids racing around in souped up Hondas, or Mitsubishi Eclipses doing their front-wheel drive burnouts and trying to outrun some Crown Vic cop car. NO. This movie has real cars, real people and real chases. Behind the somewhat bad scripting, you get to see the best of what was America. A 1968 Chevy Caprice, a 1969 Dodge Charger, and a cop car whose top end is "unlimited".Peter Fonda and Susan George make a good couple He's callous, uncaring, and the type who would tear the arms off a baby to get the "cubic money" that he needs to complete his racing career. Susan George is a prevaricating, bibbling ditz who is out for some adventure. Fondas cohort Deke, is an honest guy who finally "gets the girl" although not literally, because of the rather negative ending. Most people will hate this movie. Some, apparently enough of us love it enough to buy it. I give it 5 stars because of the dry humor and some of the best car chase scenes ever on TV. I look forward to purchasing mine, as fast cars and fast women are my thing. Its also fun to watch while you're drunk.
