Walter (Ashton Kutcher) is a rising star in the NCAA wrestling world until his life is ripped apart by the brutal murder of his sister. Returning home to console his mother Gloria (Kathy Bates) he seeks vengeance on the man who is accused of the crime. A chance meeting with a beautiful mature woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) gives him solace to the situation. Personal Effects is a heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting romance that is a testament to the power of love.

Slow but moving
I thought it was going to be a boring movie as it seemed to drag on slowly, but turned out it was a really good movie. To sum up quick, it's about tragedy and how it affects people in different ways.

Interesting film
I liked how the story brought people of different age gaps, together in their sorrow. 2 separate murdered victims. What happens & how they both deal with their feelings in the end.

Not worth your time
Cheesy, Slow, way beneath Michelle Pfiffer & Kathy Bates. Kathy Bates was the only actor worth anything in this movie. If it weren't for Kathy Bates I would have given this the lowest possible of one star and she had a small part.

I don't know yet if I am glad I saw it or wish I had my time back.
Painfully Slow Movie, but it deals with life and death and those left behind. Between Justice and victim shaming..all the screw up thing we all have to live with.I saw this movie because I work late at night, had nothing else to do..otherwise I would have passed.I don't know yet if I am glad I saw it or wish I had my time back.

a film about death...and life
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. The characters were well developed and the performances were well above my expectations. Michelle Pfeiffer played her role with a gentleness and vulnerability that I have rarely seen from her and Ashton Kutcher was perfect in his portrayal of a young man trying to deal with loss...and guilt. The film tells the story of two families attempting to come to terms with the deaths of significant family members - a father and a sister. And it portrays the various ways we have as humans of trying to cope with the loss that results from death. The relationships that arise from the attempts to deal with the losses are what makes this story so very precious. I am always surprised at what grows out of grief (based on personal experience) despite the tears and heartache. The emptiness left by our loved ones departure is an emptiness that awaits the arrival of something or someone new...if we only let it.Great movie, great perfomances, well written script and a tough subject served well by a finely crafted piece of cinematic art.

Don't miss this one!
Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates all turn in incredible performances portraying grief as they attempt, each in their own way, to cope and find a new normal following unspeakable loss. The slow pace of the movie keeps us present in the moment. Deeply connecting with the characters. Feeling the muddled messiness that is their loss, and the confusion that comes with attempting to stumble their way forward. This story reminds me of our basic needs to be known and loved, and to know and love others. Cherishing every moment. Never taking others for granted. While this review may seem somber, the movie is really quite heartwarming. So, don't miss this one!

Surprisingly Good
Yes the film is slow and a little depressing but the Director wanted to create that atmosphere. Ashton plays Walter, a Wrestler who has come home to help his Mother (Kathy Bates) after his Sister is brutally murdered, leaving behind a 5 year old daughter. His mother attends a Support Group and its here he meets Linda (a brilliant Michelle Pfeiffer) whose husband was also murdered. Linda has a teenage Son who is deaf and who is struggling to cope with the murder of his father.Walter is quite a shy person, he doesn't talk much, you also get the impression that he hasn't had much to do with women. Linda comes onto him a bit, asking him to attend a Wedding with her (her job is arranging and helping at the Wedding receptions). At the second Wedding she invites him to, she makes her move! Although the film features this gentle love story, it is not a major part of the film. Its a 'sweet' romance, we see them kissing and laid in bed together, but there are no strong sex scenes. The 15 certificate is due to the minor violence in the film.Linda is quite a bit older than Walter, although we are never told her age, but Walter is 24. Ashton and Michelle have a great chemistry together. Michelle is such a brilliant actress, so believable in all the roles she plays. I was suprised at Ashton, having only watched him in comedic roles, he does a good job of playing Walter.During the whole 'romance', Walter and Linda are both attending the trials of the people accused of murdering their loved ones. One outcome is not what was expected and then tragic consequences occur (although it is slightly obvious what is going to happen from the opening sequence of the film). The film won't be everyone's cup of tea, but is worth a watch.
