How far apart can the speakers be put (or, how far from where the cable splits to one of two ends (not the 'source')?

This audio splitter is 8 feet, the cable split is in the middle of this cable, both the length from two ends to the split is 4 feet, so the length between two ends is 8 feet.

Where is the split on the 8 ft cable. How long is the 2 male plug section and how long is the 1 female plug section?

The length of each cable after the split is 4feet (or 120cm). The length of each cable before the split also be 4feet (or 120cm). You can share music from a computer to two separate speakers.

I have headphones with a boom microphone which I use for the phone and computer.  Does the microphone capability function as well?

No. This splitter is an audio splitter, no mic function.
If you connect a TRRS headset (mic+headphone) to a dual-jack computer, you may need another headset adapter cable. It has two male plugs, one for mic and one for audio:
