Known as 'the angriest black man in America', Malcolm X was one of the most famous activists to ever live. Going beyond biography, Black Minded examines Malcolm X's philosophical system, restoring his thinking to the pantheon of Black Radical Thought. Michael Sawyer argues that the foundational concepts of Malcolm X's political philosophy - economic and social justice, strident opposition to white supremacy and Black internationalism - are often obscured by an emphasis on biography. The text demonstrates the way in which Malcolm X's philosophy lies at the intersection of the thought of W.E.B. Du Bois and Frantz Fanon and is an integral part of the revolutionary politics formed to alleviate the plight of people of African descent globally. Exploring themes of ontology, the body, geographic space and revolution, Black Minded provides a much-needed appraisal of Malcolm X's political philosophy. Review: A journey into the political intentionality of Malcolm X - This book delves into Malcolm X's political thinking and the particular urgency he placed on acquiring freedom for his people. Sawyer enlists thinkers and activists Foucault, Fanon, DuBois and others to make his points and voyage through thoughts around the usefulness in this regard of black nationalism, "thinking on the go", positive black subjectivity, and the necessity of internationalizing the struggle. A great read and radical political reference. Review: Malcolm X The King of Black Supremacy - To read and expand my mind..

Mandatory Reading!
It was really nice to see Malcolm’s philosophic thinking curated and treated with so much care. What he represents for the development of black nationalist thought can’t be overstated. Chapter three is my favorite one. Thinking about geography explicitly really made it clear how far Malcolm took black nationalism via marronage in his speeches that he is rarely given credit for as a theoretician. Michael Sawyer did something incredible with this book. This book is mandatory reading for anyone interesting in Black intellectual history or the theoretical contributions of a figure like Malcolm.
