do you put this on before cooking or after (like you would salt)

Hi. I do both. Sometimes I sprinkle it on weds or roast potatoes before cooking, sometimes meat too. I also use it on potato crisps, and for anything that lacks taste sometimes, like instant noodles. It's even nice sprinkled on mash!

Is this like the red salt you get from takeaways?

I’m afraid I don’t know the red salt as I tend not to have takeaways . I use the Schwartz seasoning on home made potato wedges , cut large potatoes into wedges , put in a large bowl , sprinkle with olive oil , mix and sprinkle with the seasoning . Mix again and tip onto a baking sheet , bake for about 45 mins , gas mark 180 . Hope that is some help .
