She loved it. Beautiful book.

So I was going to buy this book at a local reindeer farm but waited to see how much it was on Amazon and it was half the price here. The pictures are beautiful and the story is so cute. Going to make it apart of our Christmas Eve night tradition.

I do a Christmas book sack for Advent every year for my kids with books we can read as a family. My 9 year old loves reindeer so I picked this one for her. The photos are breathtaking and fun to look at. The story is about a girl name Anya who finds a baby reindeer and takes care of him and raises him. It's a cute story of their friendship and enjoyable to see the things they do together. Then suddenly the reindeer sees a herd of other reindeer and feels sad, so the girl calls the cardinal bird that helped her before (a reference to a different book). She journeys to Santa and leaves the reindeer with him in exchange for a puppy she wanted. Very strange ending and kind of sad. The whole book was great til that part.

I like to add to my Christmas children’s book collection every year. This series is fantastic. My grandson and I had a cozy story time with it.

BEAUTIFUL AND STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS. AN ENDEARING STORY TO BE READ EVERY YEAR AT CHRISTMAS. THIS WILL BECOME A NEW TRADITION FOR MY 2 YR OLD GRANDSON AS HE GROWS. THE VIVID PHOTOGRAPHS REMINDED ME OF ALL THOSE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS MAGAZINES I EAGERLY STUDIED EACH MONTH, FOR YEARS, WHILE GROWING UP. AND IT TURNS OUT, PER BREIEHAGEN (LORI EVERTS SPOUSE) HAS CONTRIBUTED TO NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS. THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE SO ENCHANTING THAT I STUDIED THEM FOR A WHILE, ABSORBING THE MAGIC OF THE SCENES . MY GRANDSON JUST KEPT DARTING HIS EYES EVERYWHERE. AS HE GROWS, THESE BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS WILL DRAW HIM INTO READING THE UPLIFTING STORY. ALSO PURCHASED THE EARLIER BOOK, THE CHRISTMAS WISH, AT THE SAME TIME. A RARE SET OF CLASSIC BOOKS IN THE OLDER TRADITION OF ADVENTURE BOOKS. GREAT FOR CHILDREN.

The base photos are gorgeous, the photo editing isn't great, but it's still lovely to look at. Be aware there are a couple references to the previous book and this doesn't quite stand alone. The only major flaw with this book is the almost nonsensical plot. A cardinal tells a young girl to raise a baby reindeer. She plays with her reindeer friend all year through the seasons, and plays fiddle for him in multiple locations. Then she thinks he is lonely for his own kind and wants to join a wild herd. So she spends her magic Santa wish to ask for advice from the cardinal, who tells her to give the reindeer to Santa (not return him to the herd he cried for) and Santa gives her a choice of three puppies to choose from as a trade, because on page one we learned she wanted a puppy last year, before the reindeer. (Why three? I know I'm over thinking it, but it's just one of many arbitrary touches.) Then she takes her puppy home, and wakes up wondering if it was all a dream. Huh? She wonders if the whole YEAR with her beloved reindeer was a dream?? Or she just wonders if the meeting with Santa was a dream (in which case where did the reindeer go?) and then the book asks the reader where YOU think the puppy came from -- Dream or Santa? Odd ending. Nice to look at but just so much wasted potential with the poor writing.

This book, part of a series, is another beautiful story about Anja. The illustrations are beautiful. We bought this for our great niece. Last year we gave her The Christmas Wish. She loves them both.

My grandchildren love the pictures in this book and it came quickly and in perfect condition.
