I had serious doubts about my ability to apply henna to my hair, but I cast all doubts the side and tried it. I purchased the neutral Henna, as I have many blonde highlights, and I’m trying to grow my hair back to its natural color, which is more of a dishwater blonde. I used the gloves and the hair cap which came in the kit. The Henna was a green color, and all I did was mix enough hot water in it so that it resembled pancake batter. I had read reviews were folks had said to not use any metal, such as a metal pan or spoon as you would turn your hair green. I separated my hair into about five or six segments. However I did not want my bathroom to look like a swamp, so I colored my hair outside. I just put a blanket down but I didn’t care about and gooped this pancake mix on each segment. When I was done with each segment I rolled it into a big bun on the top of my head, gooped more Henna on it and covered it with the shower cap that it came with. I also had an additional shower cap that I used. I left it on for one and a half hours. Now by that time it was very dry, and it looked like I had oatmeal in my hair. I went back outside and used my garden hose to rinse out all of the Henna. But then I went back in the shower and put a deep conditioner on my hair for about five minutes. I did not shampoo my hair, until after 24 hours had passed . Now I wasn’t quite sure the first day about the texture of my hair. I felt like I didn’t get all of the hen it out, but it was noticeably thicker, and shinier. But after the second day I shampooed it and put conditioner on it and dried it, and man the results were great. My hair looked shiny and healthy. My sides and ends that were dried and very bleach’s, were softer and healthier looking.The neutral did color my highlights a little bit, but it turned them more of a honey color rather then bleached out blond. The product said it was neutral, but I think because the mixture was green, that’s what muted my highlights a bit, but I did not mind as it turned my highlights more of a golden honey color .it also made the transition of roots to bleached highlights less noticeable. The Henna smelled like a cross between tea leaves and grass. I thought it smelled pleasant, actually. This Henna seems to be of high quality as it was very finely ground. But, if I were you, I would definitely do the whole Process outside. The mess is worth it, though. Plus, I felt like I was doing my hair a favor instead of stripping it further with bleach. Next time I will leave on for two hours or more. This is an honest review, I was not paid nor given any samples. I just decided to take the plunge to Henna, and give up the expensive hair salons and vicious bleaching cycle.

Amazing results and no allergic reactions. Love it! I just used Henna for the first time. I normally used chemical box hair dyes, available anywhere. I last dyed my hair on January 23rd with a Nutrisse Garnier color. I ended up having a bad reaction to it, which got worse on the second and third days after dying my hair. Benadryl saved me. Then bought another brand, Clairol Naturals, ammonia free, as recommended by a stylist from Oprah. Decided to perform the allergy test and within 24 hours, that patch of skin started showing signs of an allergic reaction. Decided to give Henna a try but was cautious. Performed the recommended allergy test, nothing happened, no allergic reaction of any kind. So today was the first time I have used it on my hair. I do have sensitive skin and have some psoriasis patches on my scalp. No itching, burning or irrtitation of any kind so far. I only used half of the pack of Henna because my hair is above my shoulders and I have very little grey hair, just one here and there. I mixed half of the pouch with 3 tsp of olive oil, 10 drops of lavender essential oil and warm coffee, as recommend by other reviewers if you don't want it too red (I naturally have dark brown hair). I left the henna on my hair for 1 1/2 hours, rinsed for a half hour and conditioned twice with a sulfate free conditioner. I blow dried my hair on low and styled as usual. The color is beautiful, my hair feels soft and healthy. I am so happy with the results. Because I only used half of the packet, I will get two dye sessions with one pack, which makes this purchase a great deal. I actually like the earthy smell and adding lavender essential oils to the henna helped. After rinsing and conditioning, I can sometimes catch a faint whiff of the henna smell in my hair, but it's very light and again, I really like the smell. I can't speak for how long this will last in my hair before I need to do it again, but I will come back and update my review once I can give more information about longevity. I cannot believe that I haven't found this stuff sooner. I would definitely recommend this brand and will be coming back for more. Update: as of 6/24/14 I still love this stuff! So I use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner each time I wash my hair, which is everyday. I would say that this stuff lasts at least 6-8 weeks or more before needing to do it again. Also, instead of olive oil I have used coconut oil with fantastic results too. Another tip after putting it on your hair, keep a disposable shower cap on or use plastic wrap to wrap your hair up. While the henna mixture is sitting on your hair, you want the moisture to stay in. This will reduce the amount of time it takes to rinse it out.

I did so much research before trying henna. I was confident in Henna King. I picked Copper to go over my Terra Cotta red (first picture). I did everything exactly as the videos for them said. I didn't add anything extra, either. I don't know if I was a victim of mislabeling as I am seeing in other Amazon reviews or if this isn't a clean henna as they say, but after my journey I am coming back to give a review. 1. I originally used a dark deep box red 2. upon getting bored with the dark color, I did a bleach bath and fell in love with the ginger look. 3. I started using Wella Terra Cotta which was a bit darker than my bleach bath but still had a more natural shade than the previous boxed color. 4. I was growing weary of the dulled ends chemicals left behind, so I started looking into henna. 5. I thought Henna King would be great to move on to, try and get my shine back, etc. 6. I did exactly what the instructions said to, and I should have followed the alarm bells when the instructions said no dye release period was necessary but I did as it said anyway. 7. my immediate results were so dark brown with ends and more porous areas BLACK. no joke. good thing it was Halloween time? (pic #2 is 3 days after my attempt to strip it >>) And yes, I did do a clarifying hair treatment prior because water is particularly hard in my area. 8. I spent the next 2 days attempting to remove as much dark color as possible with tips on Dr Google. Looking back, I recall green tints coming out in the coconut oil and lemon juice I put my hair through so I do wonder if there was bad indigo in the mix they sent me (should have never contained indigo for COPPER anyway!). I was able to get enough out over the next week to avoid cutting my hair and live with it. 9. 2 months later, after finding another henna via Dr Google by typing in "why did my red henna turn black" and that had much more of a cautious approach to their products (no premixed items, lots of wonderful reading on plant details and science of henna and hair and the dangers that lurk in the henna world) I decided to try again. This time just over my hair as is, no lightening first. It was day and night. the color was amazing. I spent months using their products and being part of an online community with real results from real people, even those continuing to do lightening, perming, etc etc things to their hair with no hiccup! 10. Well ... I wanted to go back to my more ginger days. I had an ombre thing in mind to keep my dark roots... I attempted to bleach my length at 20 and 30 vol with a temple chunk at 30 vol longer for a fun semi perm color. My hair suddenly became extremely hot and I started to see smoke or something, and I jumped in the shower just 10-15 minutes into the process. Sure, I should have done a test section for longer than 5 minutes, but who is thinking the are bad things in Henna King?? My hair didnt fall out or melt or catch fire, luckily, but I did get a very distinct green cast on my length of hair (now a strange light brownish ginger) and my light streak had so much green in it, you can see braided in the 3rd picture. The parts of my growth that hady new henna company on it bleached fine but the older length with HK? ugh. Luckily I had picked magenta for my fun color so the color wheel told me it should cover the green, but my length?? Henna attaches to the keratin in your hair (learning science things!) so I knew I couldn't just henna over the green. 11. I ended up having to use a bottle I had left over from my Terra Cotta days and soak my length in it to cover the green cast. I am sad I cannot lighten the parts of my hair I wanted to but I'm glad I didn't lose my hair. I will just have to wait 2-3 years before my hair grows enough to cut all the HK out and at that time I can consider lightening again. In the mean time I am adjusting my henna to a deeper red dye release and copperverry fruit acid to put (FX!) a bright auburn over my new length color, I cant wait for my AS package to show up and make my length look naturally red again! Hopefully it can cover up some of this mess any way, because I def can't strip the color out knowing there's ugly green under there! But hey, if u want to go magenta with AF's Wrath, it'll cover any residual green nicely (last pic). BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!

This was my first time using Henna Maiden, and I would like to preface this review by saying I am absolutely delighted with this product! It's wonderful. First I'll give a brief background, and then I'll outline what needs to be done to have a successful go at using this product. I've also uploaded pictures. I'm a natural redhead, but now that I'm older I have a fair bit of grey, and need some help. Trying to maintain my natural red color that I grew up with has been expensive, as my hair is long, and my hair was paying for it as well because it grows quickly and the processing dried it out horribly. After a year my hair had the look and texture of hay, which was horrible and beyond remedy. After googling 'red hair' I stumbled upon this product. Now, why I had not heard of this before, I'll never know because I swear it's God's gift to redheads! It's affordable, beautiful, nourishing, it does not fade as other products (from what I've heard), and you can do it right at home - and it's ORGANIC! How can you beat that, right? So I did some research and gave it a go. Here is some pointers for you if you're a first timer like me. After doing this once, I realized very quickly exactly what needed to be done for a "better" or "easier" experience. So here goes... #1. AMOUNT: I have long hair down to my waist, but it's not as thick as it used to be. After reading reviews from others with long hair I decided to mix three packages of Henna Maiden Natural Radiant Red. I followed the directions explicitly. I will tell you that I had far more than needed and actually ended up wasting one third of it. So next time, I'll know better. For those of you with thicker hair, I would suggest the three packages. #2. MIXING: I did not add egg or oil. But I did use tea, which I have heard helps "set" the color or intensify it. I chose Earl Grey because it has a beautiful bergamot scent and a lovely color as well. Henna is an herb which smells very "green". It was not offensive to me at all! I actually found it quite therapeutic. But for those of you who want to cover that, then I suggest using the Earl Grey tea or essential oils. For the three packages I used FOUR CUPS of hot tea. This created a thick paste which resembled something you'd see in your infant's diaper. :) #3. PREP: Here's the key - you need to prep. I purchased the following before I applied the product: - a large inexpensive towel for wrapping my hair afterward - because the color does bleed immediately after. - petroleum jelly to line my hairline and cover my ears - a thick pair of rubber dish gloves (playtex). I do not suggest using the ones in the package as they split easily and are not form fitting. - celophane wrap or cling wrap to wrap your head. Again, I do not suggest using the shower cap in the package as it is quite thin and unstable. - an old t-shirt or two - small hair clips - large comb Now that you have your items assembled, remove everything in your bathroom that would possibly be exposed to any potential dripping. Henna will stain on contact. I removed my bathroom rugs and towels, and items from my vanity as well. I began by separating my hair into segments. I know now that is an extremely imporant part of preparation. Because once your gloves are slathered in henna, separating and combing your hair for the next application will be virtually impossible. Therefore, as part of your prep, take the time to separate your hair into small segments all over your head with a small clip. I had washed my hair prior to application, and my hair was damp when I applied the product, which made it much more manageable. Take the petroleum jelly and go around your hairline with a good amount, including lathering your ears. #4. APPLICATION: Now that you have your hair prepped, begin applying the paste at the root working it in like you would a shampoo, and then draw it out gradually through the strands. The strands must be completely covered! Wrap that segment of hair to your head into a 'bun'. Apply a topcoat of paste to that bun. I suggest working at the front first so that hair is removed and you can clearly see what you're doing. Continue this process over the entire area of your head, wrapping the hair around that central 'bun'. When you're finished you should have all your hair secured to the top of your head. Then coat the entire head in henna paste. Once you've coated your head, begin wrapping your head in celophane. Leave no gaps. #5. PROCESSING: I allowed 2.5 hours for my hair. I found that to be more than enough time for the color I wanted. I washed my gloves carefully, donned them again, and began to unwrap my head. I made to sure to have a small trash bag at my side so I could safely discard the used celophane - because it can be a mess. Once my head was unwrapped I rinsed out the product with warm water by kneeling over the rim of my bathtub and dipping my head beneath the spigot. This worked perfectly, keeping all the runoff away from my face and other parts of my body. I allowed a good rinse for about 20 minutes. You'll find that there is a lot of bleeding and it took a long while before the water ran clear. Once it did, I washed my hair of any possible residue and applied a light conditioner. I used the special towel to wrap my hair and as expected, there was a significant amount of 'bleed'. Then I dried my hair. #6. RESULTS: The immediate results were shocking at first, I must say. For a bold personality such as mine, they had the ability to make me shy. :) The color was a bright orange (I used Radiant Natural Red). The color was extraordinarily intense and bright. Yet I held to hope that it would continue to do it's magic and IT DID. The next day I shampooed my hair again and I did not see a lot of color change until the SECOND FULL DAY. I will tell you that henna behaves much differently than conventional chemical dyes. The color turned a beautiful auburn that was absolutely stunning. I will tell you that I've received compliment after compliment from jealous women who were dying to know if that was my natural color. When I told them my secret they were stunned. (See photos) So if you use this product, please know that initially, the color can be extraordinarily bright and look a bit garish and gaudy. But by the second day it was absolutely GORGEOUS - precisely what I wanted. For those of you who are able - do it on a weekend. Process on Friday night and by Monday morning at the office, you'll be a knockout! #7. TEXTURE | MANAGABILITY: As for the texture of my hair, I am AMAZED. I've found that henna actually "healed" my hair. It no longer feels or looks like hay at all. It feels silky soft and it SHINES. Henna does make your hair feel thicker, because it does something to the shaft that is very therapeutic. So if you have fine hair (I have moderate - it is neither coarse or fine) you'll probably be thrilled with this benefit as well. My hair responded very well to a curling iron, and I am tickled pink at the results. Every one of my friends who have seen me since the process give an eye-popping "Wow!!!" with a huge smile. They've said, "I LOVE your hair!!!" And they're amazed when I tell them what I've done. I hope this post if helpful to all of you who intend to use this product. As for me, dipping my head into chemicals every 6-8 weeks for a price tag of $100 + for the rest of my life was no longer an option for me for numerous reasons (cost, chemical exposure, etc.). This procuct is a God-send and I will NEVER go back. I will have you know that I'm well stocked. :) I hope you try it and find the results to be just as GLORIOUS as I did! So I got this yesterday and used it last night. I read the package which said how pivotal it was to follow the directions and use the recommended amount of henna powder. For me it recommended that I use two different packages because I have longer than shoulder length hair that is thick. I was anxious to use the package anyways and it was a fine amount for my hair! Thats the only complaint about this product. I have read that henna dye can often smell "earthy" and I can't say i disagree however the smell wasn't too strong or overwhelming, however lingering. I conditioned my hair twice when I was washing the clay out and yet its been hours and I am still getting whiffs of the smell. I was consulting my boyfriend and he said he couldn't even tell even when he smelled my hair lol. This is my first time using henna, I started dying my hair chemically about a year ago to get my dirty blonde hair to the beautiful color pictured in the 'copper' hair color picture shown with this henna. The only time I was able to achieve that color was at salon, which was $80 until I dyed with this last night. Before I dyed my hair I outlined my hair line and my ears with a cotton ball soaked in olive oil, I suppose Vaseline would have done the trick, and sectioned off my hair into 6 or 7 different sections with basic hair ties. I poured the powder and warm water until the mixture looked like pudding. I also cracked an egg and poured about a tablespoon of vanilla into the mixture as well. I had read online that the egg is super for conditioning and the vanilla is for the smell, I am not sure about the egg but the vanilla didn't really help but neither hurt. After I stirred the mixture till all the clumps were gone I began to apply. BUY YOUR OWN GLOVES the ones in the package were terrible! They were so loose and baggy that i kept getting henna on my wrists and palms although I was still wearing those dang bags with fingers! Also I used an extra shower curtain on the ground just in case, I thought that this was unnecessary after I had finished; as long as your not doing it on carpet than you should be fine. I beggan to dye to my hair by first scooping the brown goop into my lowest sectioned hair, working on the roots first and then all the way down to the ends. I read how important it was for the henna to touch each hair or it wouldn't dye so after each section I combed the hair with a wide tooth comb. After I had worked my way to the top I scooped the rest of the henna and put it into the ends of my hair that I had gathered into a bun-like mess on the top of my head. with the little amount of stuff that was left I focused on my roots and scalp, with box dyes you can't do that cause of the chemicals (leaving me to have patchy roots through out my head). Now my hair is even toned (except for the pre-existing highlights I had from having a summer life guarding job) and after washing out the clay my scalp doesn't look hennaed at all. Which leads me to the next point: don't worry if you get henna on you. After I had put my hair up and set my timer for 45 minutes ( DO NOT DO IT FOR A 1.5 HOUR AS RECOMMEND YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A FIRE TRUCK ) I started to wash off where I had gotten the henna on my face, arms and neck. After some soap and water, the spots left vague yellow blotches. I wasn't worried, however when I went to take my hair down I noticed I had mud still caked to my ears. I was annoyed but proceeded to take a shower to wash the stuff out. After the shower there is no dying of my scalp, neck, ears or arms. Nothing. A few other things to keep in mind when your hennaing your hair: make sure you use a hair wrap or plastic wrap to keep the mud wet and warm or else it wouldn't work. prepare to have a muddy shower. I closed my eyes to wash out the henna and when I had opened up my eyes I looked like what I had seen when I had done a mud run a couple months back, pretty messy but not too bad.. DO NOT LEAVE THE MUD IN LONGER THAN AN HOUR. this I learned from reading other reviews on here, all of which recommend using 45 minutes to 1 hour but nothing more. I just assume that any review that said their hair looks like Ronald McDonald they left the mix in for the recommend time of 1.5-2 hours. THIS IS THE REASON WHY I GAVE THIS 4 OUT OF 5 STARS. You should't use heat on your henna dyed hair for a few days. The time after the application is called the 'oxidation' period and can last 3-5 days. During that time the henna still reacting with your hair so therefore adding extra heat may make it a darker shade. I read about a lady who had this happen to her and the darker color was very nonuniform and patchy. Use a towel you don't care about to wrap around your neck to limit the amount of henna you get on you. Wear a nasty shirt for the same reasons. Don't stress about the results. I was stressed that it wouldn't turn out very well because I had no idea what to expect since there is no box color swaps. But never the less my hair looks beautiful and it feels sooooo silky and soft. I will completely recommend this product to anyone and I WILL be using again. It is so much more worth the extra $5 to buy henna than the chemical ridden box dyes.

. Like another reviewer I used another Henna product that came as a cream - which didn't do a thing to color my whites. SO I found this and tried ... The following review is after 4 applications - (6 pouches/bags) (2bags - first coloring, 1 bag - 2nd/3rd times, 2 bags - fourth time) ... THE PROS : - colors whites beautifully - hair looks really healthy THE CONS : - Stinks . . even after a couple showers. - WHY DOESN'T THE COMPANY PUT THEIR OWN MASHED LAVENDER / EUCALYPTUS LEAVES IN? . . . No wonder people were giving ones . . It smells and looks like a horse pasture (I rode horses for 14 years.. love the smell, just not on my hair). **AND THE SMELL COMES BACK** when you sweat, wash your hair, get it wet, or even jump in the jacuzzi with your head above water. ! ! ! You'll start off with 'oh this is fine it's just grassy' - then you'll end-up with stench. - A FEW DROPS OF OIL ??? It requires *2 FL oz's* of Eucalyptus oil to cover the smell from one coloring (2 bags). . I asked one of my GUY friends to smell my hair after using "just a couple of drops of essential oil" per the company's suggestion. He said 'I'm getting this urge to grab my lawn mower'.. - The Extra Costs . . That 'just a few drops of oil' is really expensive - especially because it costs $5 for a 0.5 oz bottle . . and I need 2 oz's ($13 online) plus subsequent drops of oil during showers to keep the smell away. - Putting it on = HARD!! The gloves are flimsy with the thick paste; they come-off easily . . It's just a mess. I can't do root touch-ups because this product is so thick and gooey - it won't reach down to just the roots. The only thing I could figure was if I put the goo into a piping bag and tried to get my roots that way, but I never took the time to try. - It gets into your ears (WEAR EAR PLUGS). So that's fixable enough. - Getting the Right Color = HARD . . They write 'be patient' . . The coloring with 'Light Brown' gave me red hair tint (something I am not a fan of) . . I figured it was due to my old hair coloring affecting it. So I took their advice to put in a TEASPOON of salt to the 'Light Brown' powder. It made my hair black-brown. Both are very healthy looking - but not what I expected from Light Brown. IF YOU TRY THIS - and want to get rid of the red tint - try 1/4 a teaspoon first - !!! - HARD TO GET OFF YOUR SKIN . . It cakes like crazy onto your skin and though they say 'comes off easily with soap, water, and a washcloth', you need to go at it with your nails and scrape away, right after coloring. - Bathtub / shower is left a mess . . Sticks to the walls. IF YOU WANT TO TRY . . BUY : - 2 bags -- for just-below shoulder length hair ($20-24 .. w/shipping) - 1 2oz bottle of Euclyptus oil ($13) - Ear Plugs ($4-7) - DO NOT USE PERFUME to hide scent (it will cause reds to come-out in coloring . . I tried . .) FOR ONE HAIR COLORING I PAID : $37-44 If you don't mind all of the above and the colors work for you, go for it; it does color whites. And your hair is really healthy looking. I personally am very gung ho about being natural - and love their concept . . . . . But I'm also miffed - why should I have to buy all that stuff to make their product work? . . . Hopefully the company reads this - and adds natural Eucalyptus / Lavender leaves to their product to get rid of the pervasive smell, as well as increases the qty to be reasonable for a monthly / bi-monthly coloring for just-below shoulder length hair.

This stuff is great. I have very very fine and thin hair thats about chest length. I was really worried because the instructions recommended more that a package for a full head of hair but because my hair is so thin I only needed one. ( Id still recommend getting 2 packs if your hair is past shoulder length and normal thickness, if its past your mid back you may need 3. Try to find the chart of how much you need, its shown on the back of the the package.) I like this pack compared to buying henna and indigo separately because you can choose the color option that already has the perfect ratio of henna and indigo to give the desired color, rather than guessing because too much indigo = black and too much henna = red I was going for brown hair and i bought miraculous medium brown for 15.99. This was a drastic change for me because my hair has been chemically processed (to be blonde) a lot before this. I decided to go brown to I can stop worrying about brassy hair. Blonde hair is a lot of work to take care of and I could never keep it the cool ash shade I wanted without constantly putting in chemicals. The process is messy and smelly and takes a long time but its so worth it. I mixed the powder with half water and half apple cider vinegar and got right to work Covered my entire head and waited 2 hrs. As soon as your done make sure to wipe off everything before it stains. Wash your hands and ears and forehead and neck after if you see any henna on them. IT WILL STAIN YOUR SKIN if you leave it. I didn't wash of my hands and they were green and no matter how much you scrub it wont go, it will also really dry out your hands. Although I used the gloves at first I was having a hard time using them cause they are huge for my hands so near the end I used my bare hands to make sure everything was covered -bad idea. I did this a week ago and there is still a little green in the cracks of my knuckles and my hands are very dry were I left the henna. This was of course my fault and won't happen to you as long as you wash after using it. So many have complained about the smell. I laughed at the people who just add water and complain about the smell, I would like to see their reaction to smelling it when adding vinegar. Granted, its not a smell most would like in their hair, the smell of the powder itself is an earthy muddy planty smell. Adding vinegar will of course make the smell worse but helps a lot because henna works well with pHs around 5. The smell reminds me of matcha tea powder. If the smell is really that terrible add essential oils to make it better. Result: My hair absorbed the color very well, too well actually. It was more of a dark brown, probably because my hair was dry and light to start so it took in the color more. I'm still happy with it because it covered my brassy hair. I'm also happy because my hair actually does look thicker. Some people said it dried out there hair but as long as you condition well after you wash it out it shouldn't be a problem.

I bought this to brighten my naturally auburn hair and make it a bit more vibrant as well as make it healthier. This was my first time applying henna to my hair so I read instructions and information from multiple websites. I expected there to be a mess, but I ended up having to apply the product while standing in my bathtub because it kept splattering out of my hair. It was like rubbing gloppy mud into my hair. The smell wasn't terrible, though. Kind of like wheat grass. I added a couple drops of essential oil to make it more pleasant. I used one package on my rather long (waist length), very curly hair. It was about the consistency of pancake batter like the directions said and there was more than enough. One thing I did notice is that it ran a bit down the back of my neck. I'd recommend keeping a towel over your neck or wrapping all of your hair in plastic wrap in addition to using the enclosed cap. The cap didn't cover my entire head and as a result some of the coverage was uneven. The instructions stated to leave the product on 1-2 hours. As I did NOT want a very dramatic change I only waited one hour. My hair is now orange. I think 15-20 minutes would be ideal for lighter to light/medium hair and the 1-2 hours is for brown/dark brown hair. I am hoping the color fades a bit after a few washes. I don't feel like I'll buy this product again. I don't require gray coverage and my natural color is pretty okay. If you're unhappy with your natural color or need to cover gray this may work better for you. Another suggestion I'd make is, if you can, go topless when you use this so you don't have to bother trying to wash this stuff out of your hair in a sink or taking your shirt off without ruining it to get in the shower. I combed my hair as I washed it and that seems to help rinse the product out.
