Birth of a Legend McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II

I am an F-4 phanatic. I have tons of books on the F-4, including pilot flight and weapons employment manuals for almost every major variant. This is not a combat, production, or service history. It focuses on the concept, design, and development of the prototypes and early production variants. None of the other books I have cover the early design and development of the F-4 to this level of detail. Not only does it cover the F-4, but it also goes into detail about Naval fighter development in the 1950s and documents the F-4s peers and rivals in Navy contracts and competitions. The photos, drawings, and information presented in this book are difficult if not impossible to find anywhere else. If you love Naval aviation history or want as much information as you can have on the F-4 Phantom, this book belongs on your shelf.

This excellent volume is also known as Naval Fighters #108.I am a huge fan of the author, Tommy H. Thomason. I have collected most, if not all of his available aviation books. The subject book is about as good as it gets, and any aviation buff will skip this at his own risk. In fact, skipping anything by Tommy Thomason is unwise.

This is the best book I've read on the early history of the Phantom II.

Purchased from a local brick and mortar Hobby Shop (Sorry Amazon, gotta keep the neighborhood modeler's hangout going.)It is almost impossible to wax too enthusiastic about this volume from Naval Fighters (NF). Obviously built on the foundation of his other books, Mr. Thomason starts NF108 with a pre-history covering preceding aircraft programs and competitions through the conceptual Model 98 design work, to the F8U-3 competition and beyond. This also includes coverage of ordnance, spotting factors and other minutiae that make up a development and operational history. For 185 pages the volume is remarkably complete and detailed. (Please note Amazon transposed the page count. It is not 158.) Due to the subject this book does deviate a bit from the standard Ginter formula in that there are no unit histories per se. The model section is in color and as complete as can be expected for a relatively rare airplane. Another pleasant surprise is Mr. Ginter continues to discover color printing and there 24 pages with color prints interspersed towards the back of the volume. The technical illustrations and photographs also meet the usual high-quality standards of the NF series.This book cements Mr. Thomason's position as probably the best contemporary writer of the technical side of BuAer/NAVAIR. Two more volumes on the B/N and J/S models would not be unwelcome and if similar in scope would undoubtedly make for an ultimate 3 volume library on the USN Phantom that would be without peer.This book is well worth the price. Highly recommended without reservation and a must buy for anyone interested in the F-4 and modelers.

The usual format of this series packed to the gunwales with details, photo's (mostly B&W), and diagrams and reasonably extensive unit histories. I have ALL the titles and enthusiastically await the new lot. Never a dull read and required reading for modellers for unit detail and version differences.

Recht knapp die ersten Entwwicklungsschritte zu den F 4 Varianten. kein Standardwerk, aber was besseres ist mir nicht bekannt. Der Vogel ist ja schon ein Fall für Geschichtsliebhaber...

GinterさんのYF23に続き購入。何時ものギンター本だと思うと間違うファントムの開発史。同期の機体には特別斬新なスタイルはない。ところがF3Hからファントムへ至る道は困難だったらしい。ブードゥーで〈ケチ〉つけたんで尾翼は低くした。案外23度の変な尾翼はサイドウォッシュで効いたらしい。でもこの本で見るべきは時代を画す万能になる過程。スーパークルーセーダーが勝てなかったスパロー四本搭載の艦上艦隊防空戦闘機(あっちは三本だったかな)が希に見る機体となったのはその主翼だとスーパークルーセーダーとの比較でわかる。ほぼ現在主流の(摘まんだ：クリップド)デルタが明らか。知ってて知らないファントムの世界ならこれですね。
