GIS Fundamentals: A First Text on Geographic Information Systems, 4th edition

Bolstad "GIS Fundamentals" teaches GIS competency. While this is not a textbook those who do not need complete, comprehensive understanding of geospatial science, it is the text book of choice for those who do. We teach the U.S. Geospatial Technical Competency Model (GTCM) for ten courses in Geospatial Science. The Bolstad text provides thorough discussion of the principles and practice of GIS for which we apply the same text to three GIS courses. Text content is well organized including GIS components, data models, coordinate systems, data entry and editing, GNSS, satellite and aerial imagery, geospatial data resources and spatial data formats, attributes and tables, spatial analysis, spatial statistics, spatial data modeling and data standards and quality. This text book is well suited to instructors who want to convey professional geospatial understanding to their students.

A good book for GIS basics. It has a lot of pictures, graphs, and other ways for illustrating each chapter. It also affordable and arrived before it was expected.

As a GIS technician, I still think Bolstad is the master. He really explains everything conceptually so the information sticks, and activities provided with this book are so informative. I learned more from this book and its attached activities than from anywhere else. This is a great book, and I think all colleges with GIS should teach at least one class from this book.

This book was a great intro to how data is even created in GIS. The knowledge from this book is what you need to understand to be successful with any GIS program.

This book was recommended by my professor in Penn State GIS program. I like the way it's written. For a textbook this was super-affordable. Unlike some others who posted here, the choice of typeface in the graphics and captions does not bother me. Glad I picked up this text.

This book was delivered to me torn directly in half! I've never seen such terrible quality and I needed this book for a class. I know its a rental, but come on! This is going to be such hassle to read from every day.
