For the first time ever, this Paco De Lucia & John McLaughlin concert at Montreux is available on vinyl including a strictly limited & numbered Yellow/Orange 2LP Collectors’ Edition! On the 15th of July 1987, two guitar maestros shared the stage at Montreux Jazz Festival for an evening of breath-taking flamenco music. The repertoire is drawn from their solo albums, from albums by The Guitar Trio and from covers of music written by friends such as Chick Corea and Egberto Gismonti

Terrible film work
I haven't listened to the CD version yet but I watched a few songs on the DVD. I was very disappointed. I guess an art film student edited this. A guitarist is doing a brilliant run up and down the fretboard and the camera is focused on the back of his head or his shoe or an extreme close-up of the face. Rarely ever showed the two of them in the same shot so you could see them feeding off each other. Sometimes they close up of one hand. I want to see the whole guitar both hands.

Warped records
The music is good. Not quite "Friday Night In San Francisco", but a solid 4 out of 5. The pressing is another matter, however. Both copies that I had (225 and 229) were warped ("dished") in the label area (disc 2 (orange) a lot worse in both cases). I think, they were ruined when center hole was punched through. Also there is hum in left channel tweeter in the portion of "Spain" (Side B track 1) on both copies. If you just need a collectible novelty - go ahead and buy it. But if you planning to actually listen to it - avoid.

this was easy to review
In some ways, this was easy to review.I am listening to two first class guitarists.I enjoy and learn every time I see either or both or with Al and Larry in the trio format. However,my beef,as a guitarist,is that I wish the cameras would just go back to center stage more often, and show both mens fret work more.I know,I know,I'm thinking like a guy who wishes to study their every move on the fretboard.Do I need to see their faces and backs? All I have to do is listen to these guys music to get an idea of what they are feeling. The music says it all.All you have to do is hear the music,to see how much these 2 guys enjoy each others work. Also,I should say thank you to John,if he was the force behind putting this out, years after the concert was done. Also, may I take a moment to say Paco, you were first class, and may you rest in peace.

They sound great. It is refreshing that someone took the time ...
I guess everyone is different. Just having these performances in both audio and video format is a treasure in my opinion. On top of that, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of both the DVD and the CD's. They sound great. It is refreshing that someone took the time to put this together and ensure a good quality product. I know what the other reviewer means about some of the camera work not focusing on the fingerboards during certain passages but plenty of it does and I didn't feel this took away from the dvds at all. This is Paco and John in their prime and you can't ask for much more than that. They both absolutely burn here. Some of their best arrangements here. If you love jazz, flamenco or any of the guitar trio albums, especially Friday Night in San Francisco, I believe you will be very pleased with this.

Great music but album not at all as advertised
Cannot beat this music. But the product description indicates that the vinyl edition is " strictly limited and numbered Yellow/Orange Collectors' Edition." It is neither numbered nor Yellow Orange vinyl. I did not received what I ordered.

Chemistry and Magic
In my opinion, this was an amazing performance from two of finest musicians in the world. The musical chemistry between them was very special and obvious. The quality of the DVD and the both CD’s are very good.I am so happy they decided to release this work; it would have been a shame if it got lost, especially since Paco disappeared two years ago. It makes it so much more special seeing him on top of his game creating magic.Get it!

What Not To Love
LAM 87 has excellent sound quality.Musically it is a joy from beginning to end, not one weak track. Paco and John are definitely inspired and inspiring. A definite "no brainer" purchase for fans of either artist or fans of the Guitar Trio w/ Larry Coryell or Al Di Meola. Although recorded nearly 30 years ago it is timeless. It could have been recorded 5 years ago or 50 years from now. Just an amazing performance by two truly great artists. Amazing how John can be so brilliant in so many musical contexts and none better in this context than Paco. I haven't watched the video yet. I wish there would be an official release of the live duets John was also performing with Jonas Hellborg around this time period. Probaly not likely but some more brilliant music there.

Great dvd! A little bit too close up on ...
Great dvd! A little bit too close up on some camera shots, but other than that a good solid dvd and cd. It’s like I’m sitting there watching them.

Music great, but..
Technically very good, the dvd content marred by a director who should have never been allowed any where near any concert footage. Facial close ups and back shots when I really just want to the performer performing. Shame.

Amazing night in Montreux.
This is an excellent album which easily matches the virtuosity of Friday Night in San Francisco (one of my all time favourite albums). It's just John and Paco minus Al. The recorded sound is very good and the separation of the two guitars makes it easy to follow who is playing what.If you are a fan of either of these two players, you'll have stopped reading this and already ordered your copy.

Highly recommended viewing and listening
This is a superb release and both guitarists are on top form. The package includes 2 audio CD’s and a DVD too.The musical connection between these two giants was something else and they seem to be able to predict each other and play with passion grace and fire at the same time!Highly recommended viewing and listening.

Great music at a budget price
This release of John Maclaughlan and Paco de Lucia is excellent, in it the playing, sound and value. As well as 2 x CDs you get a DVD of highlights from the concert. What more could you wish for?
