Tolkien and C.S. Lewis: The Gift of Friendship

Interesting and Informative
This book has been very interesting. My oldest daughter and I are reading through it as part of our homeschool literature course this year. She is in 11th grade. Some of the things mentioned in the book, we knew from previous books we'd read but there are other tidbits in this book I'd never heard before. It's a good read if you love Tolkien or Lewis or both of them and I highly recommend it.

so much emewrged from one friendship
A wonderful biography of two giants of the twentieth century. The unique thing about this book is that i9t really points out how much we as readers who love Tolkien's writing, or the Narnia series. or Lewis' apologetic writings..or so much more, owe to the friendship between these two men. Tokien is instrumental in Lewis' conversion to Christianity: in their shared love of litreraqture, myth and fantasy, they insp0ire each other--and while Tolkien's influence on Lewis is pretty well known, I had not realized that Lewis' enthusiasm and encouragement enabled Tolkien to go on with his writing--especially The Hobbit. A rich and rare set of friendships is depicted in this book, as it also includes their circle of friends. Absolutely worth reading--I read it in one sitting that lastede into the wee hours because it was such a pleasure to read!

I recommend this book both to scholars and to fans
Colin Duriez, an expert on The Inklings in general and Lewis and Tolkien in particular, puts the reader "right there" in this book by detailing areas of mutual interest between these two well loved and prolific British authors whose influence is strongly felt even in the 21st Century. Duriez is unflinching in showing their understandable differences of opinion (and even feelings) on some topics and their candor as friends as well as literary colleagues. The Gift of Friendship is an excellent addition to my library of books analyzing Lewis and Tolkien as people of their time and place, as well as being highly successful authors, whose works continue to stand the test of time.

Intoxicated me is my best friend, she knows me best
I had two glasses of wine one night and woke up the next day to find intoxicated me had ordered this book. I have always adored Tolkien's work and yet, had no idea this book existed. Intoxicated me is my best friend, she knows me best.

My favourite books, gave a real insight into the friendship ...
My favourite books, gave a real insight into the friendship of Tolkien and Lewis. Two very intelligent men, with vivid imaginations and not afraid to declare their Christian faith in an unpreachy manner. The Church would learn a great deal about faith being relevant and talked about in places other than the church, e.g. the pub!
