Water is crystal clear
Amazed how well this cleaned the ponds water. Just wash it and dry it out and re use. Buy new ones every year.

works well --keep spares b/c they need to float
been using this brand for several years. such a simple thing to keep the algae down. the key point seems to be they need to float on the surface to work, and in a few weeks they sink---but i solved that. my pond is huge and i use 2 at a time, tie them around the middle with nylon string, wrap surplus strings around a brick on the side of the pond so they are easy to retrieve when they sink, and keep spare pair ready to swap out. then leave the wet ones to dry on the pond edge. usually 2 pairs keeps me going the whole season.

Works great. Look here for the secret.
This works great for free floating green algae. Not for string or clump algae. For this to work it needs to be in a constant flow of water and take 3 - 6 days for the pond to clear up. As the barley straw degrades it releases a chemical that kills the algae. So it must be in the flow of water! -1 star because I wish they had a smaller size. Took some rigging to get it to work in my pond and it could be a little cheaper. But product is effective.

The Last (Barley) Straw - It Works!
Once the warmer weather arrived it seemed as though the algae just grew so fast that I couldn't control it. I was using a chemical solution in the pond to try to control it, but it didn't appear to be helping at all. I had read reviews on Amazon and watched videos of others who have used barley straw, some successfully and some that it didn't work at all for them. So obviously I was skeptical about whether or not this product would remove the algae from my pond, not to mention I'd have to wait 30 days to find out if it would be successful. Let the photo speak for itself. In the photo you can see the BEFORE on the left taken on May 8th. The photo on the right is the AFTER taken on June 12th (about 35 days later). The barley straw in the back left in both photos (floating on left, then semi-submerged on right.) You can see the underwater pot on the right indicating the water has cleared up. I can see my fish again in the water! It does work. I'm a believer now. I should add that 2 loaves of barley straw are for a pond of up to 2500 gallons of water and my pond is around 2700 gallons.

Worked wonders on the algae in the pond
The first time I used these, I had to keep the dogs from thinking it was a toy to fetch out of the pond. This last time I used them, I had a lot of algae in the pond, and I knew it could take up to 3 weeks to make a difference. Three days later, the pond is clear, and I can see the tadpoles swimming around. I regret not having taken a before picture. Will be getting more of these for our ponds.

Now I feel slight smell of bad water. The other my pond has more square ...
My front yard resin pond is much less than 1000 gal (my estimation is less than 500 gal when it is full). I cleaned the pond manually and now it is half full. I placed one bale 3 weeks ago. Now I feel slight smell of bad water. The other my pond has more square but it is more shallow than the first one. I also tried one bale. In one week the net was torn and straw is out in ugly mess. The quality of water did not changes (bad as before).
